2020 Golden Globes Nominations: Marriage Story, The Irishman Lead the Nominations

2020 Golden Globes Nominations are finally out and it has again become a point of discussion just like the years before. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) have given their call, based on the verdict of 90 journalists all over the world. This year, in the 77th Golden Globes, the Netflix drama ‘Marriage Story‘ has garnered the most nominations (6) for a film, followed by ‘The Irishman’ and ‘Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood’ with 5 nominations each. Besides that, Joker and The Two Popes have received 4 nominations each.  With three major contenders in the race, Netflix has surely aced this year’s Golden Globes in terms of movies.

Speaking of TV nominations, there is no clear winner like the film nominations. The critics’ darling – ‘Chernobyl’, the harrowing real-life drama- ‘Unbelievable’ and the new season of ‘The Crown’ have received 4 nominations each.

The discussion is being held around how the awards have completely shut out Female filmmakers when there were several deserving candidates. ‘Little Women’ directed by Greta Gerwig, ‘The Farewell’ by Lulu Wang, ‘Portrait of a Lady on Fire’ by Celine Sciamma  ‘Atlantics’ by Mati Diop (Golden Camera winner at Cannes Film Festival) among many other female filmmakers are left out, despite the wide critical acclaim they had received.

Not just for movies, but the highly-praised Netflix series ‘When They See Us’, based on falsely accused men from the 1989 Central Park Jogger Case, is completely shut out; so is the director Ava DuVernay. Other snubs from the Television include the acclaimed shows like ‘Euphoria’, ‘Pose’ and ‘The Watchmen’. Also the snubs for HBO classic ‘Game of Thrones’ (apart from its only nomination for the Lead Actor) is quite surprising.

This year, the Golden Globes will be hosted by Ricky Gervais. The awards ceremony takes place on January 5, 2020. Here are this year’s Golden Globe nominations-

Obsessed, fascinated, and always nerding out about cinema! You can find me in the corner of a room ruminating over the last TV series I watched.
