‘Avatar: The Way Of Water’ China Release In December: James Cameron’s much-awaited sequel to his epic science fiction film ‘Avatar’ (2009) gets a much-coveted release in China. The 20th Century Studios production will release in mainland Chinese cinemas on 16th December 2022, around the same time it will release internationally.
20th Century Studios announced this information through a post on their official account on the popular Chinese social media site Sina Weibo. The studio also shared the poster as well as the trailer for their eagerly awaited sequel ‘‘Avatar: The Way Of Water’‘ to the blockbuster film.
The release of the film marks a momentous occasion and should be counted as a victory for the studio, especially in light of China’s tough control on the release of foreign films. In the recent past, China has only granted import and distribution rights to a minuscule number of films, this has to do partly with China’s strict control over cultural products to promote ‘main melody’ and partly due to its discordant relations with Western nations.
‘Avatar: Way of the Water’ will be the third foreign film to release in China in the year; Universal Pictures’ ‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’ and Sony Pictures’ ‘Where the Crawdads Sing’ was released earlier in China this year.
The release of the film theatrically in China is crucial from a box office point of view. Cameron apparently told Disney and 20th Century Studios executives that his sequel budget was so high it represented “the worst business case in movie history.” According to the director’s estimates, “you have to be the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history. That’s your threshold. That’s your break even.”
China’s release will boost its chances to become another international hit and follow the record-breaking success of its predecessor. This film will benefit from the enthusiastic anticipation of the fans of ‘Avatar’, who are waiting to see the next chapter.
The first film in the Avatar franchise wowed the audience with its spectacular use of CGI in world-building and is presently the highest-grossing film of all time at the global box office.
The film has cumulatively grossed around $2.74 billion in ticket sales alone, and the sales from China amounted to over $200 million. ‘Avatar: Way of the Water’ is made on a massive budget of over $350- $400 million and is one of the costliest films made in Hollywood, the film’s release in China not only comes as a pleasant surprise to the fans but also the Studio that can aim for a good turnover from such a large market.
