The highly anticipated Peacock series adaptation of the critically popular Wondery podcast, Dr. Death, premiered on July 15, 2021. The renewal for a second season came just one year after that. In the first season, the horrific true story of Christopher Duntsch—a neurosurgeon from Texas whose negligence caused lifelong disabilities and the deaths of two patients—was revealed. Grace Gummer, Christian Slater, and Alec Baldwin were part of the ensemble cast that included Joshua Jackson, who played the titular Dr. Death. Luke Kirby as a Cardiovascular Surgeon in Sweden
Joining the cast is Luke Kirby, set to play an important role as a cardiovascular surgeon based in a world-class hospital in Sweden. Kirby’s character faces intense pressure as he voices doubts about Dr. Macchiarini’s groundbreaking surgeries. Recognized for his Emmy Award-winning portrayal of Lenny Bruce in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and his supporting role in the Gossip Girl reboot, Kirby adds depth to the narrative with his nuanced performance. Prepare for a character torn between professional skepticism and the enigmatic world of Macchiarini’s surgeries.
Two doctors on Macchiarini’s team will be played by Ashley Madekwe and Gustaf Hammarsten. Dr. Ana Lasbrey, played by Madekwe, is called “a doctor at the institute.” In order to move up quickly in her stem cell research job, she joins Macchiarini’s team. On the other hand, Dr. Svensson from Hammarsten is “both a family man and a researcher.” When warning bells start to go off, he is managing Macchiarini’s tests on lab rats.
