Where Dune Left Us?
Dune (2021), covered roughly the first half of Frank Herbert’s ‘Dune’. It introduced the harsh waterless world of the desert planet Arrakis while simultaneously explaining to the audience the politics of the strange futuristic universe. The film follows teenager Paul Atreides, heir presumptive who has strange visions of the future. It begins with House Atreides moving to Arrakis from the ocean planet Caladan following his father Duke Leto when he is given control of Arrakis.
The film also detailed the Bene Gesserit and their millennium-long breeding program; the quest for spice, a powerful drug necessary for interstellar travel and to view the future; the unique tribe of the indigenous population of Arrakis the Fremen; and finally, the coup on house Atreides by the Emperor and the house Harkonnen that results in the fleeing of Paul and his mother Jessica into the unforgiving sands of the dangerous mystical planet of Arrakis inhabited by the majestic Sandworms.
The film left us with Paul meeting the mysterious woman of his vision Chani and going to live with and learn the ways of the Fremen making peace with the planet Arrakis while his enemies control the planet.
