Will there be a ‘The Diplomat’ Season 2?: Netflix’s The Diplomat is a smart, slick, and highly effective political drama that surpassed the viewer’s expectations. It followed the story of a US diplomat, Kate Wyler, who was suddenly told to head to the UK as the US ambassador to stop a geopolitical crisis. While resolving this pressing concern, she also has to contend with her failing marriage with her husband and fellow diplomat, Hal Wyler.

What was the general consensus about ‘The Diplomat’ Season 1?

The first season of this thrilling series premiered on April 20, 2023, on Netflix. It received both critical acclaim and love from the audience. In its first weekend itself, it had surpassed over 57 million numbers of viewing and immediately appeared to rise to No 1 in the Top 10 list.

Meanwhile, on Rotten Tomatoes, it was declared Fresh with 88% positive reviews from the critics and an 83% average audience score. The critics loved Keri Russell’s excellent performance and how the showrunner churned out a highly binge-able entertainment from a geopolitical crisis. It also started getting compared to the likes of critically-acclaimed shows like Aaron Sorkin’s The West Wing and Julia Louis-Dreyfus-led Veep.

So the fans were eager to know what happened after the cliffhanger ending of the show’s first season. As we mentioned in our Season 1 Recap, there was real potential in exploring many of its narrative threads.

Has ‘The Diplomat’ been renewed for Season 2?

For all the fans, here’s an exciting update about the Keri Russell-led series. ‘The Diplomat’ has been renewed for a second season, which will most possibly launch in 2024.

The vice president of Drama Series, Netflix said, “Fans around the world are loving every minute of The Diplomat’s gripping and propulsive drama and embracing Keri Russell’s powerful performance as Kate Wyler.  After that jaw-dropping cliffhanger, we can’t wait for them to see what the amazing visionary team of Debora Cahn, Janice Williams, and Keri Russell have in store for Season 2.”

Kerry Russell said, “I am thrilled to be headed back for another round of this smart screwball show. Dare I say it’s fun? Thank you, Netflix, for giving us another shot,”

The showrunner Debora Cahn added, “We had such a great time making The Diplomat. And it’s a thrill to see how much people are enjoying it. We’re so glad we get to do it again!”

Besides Keri Russell, the show also stars a phenomenal set of actors such as Rufus Sewell, David Gyasi, Ali Ahn, Ato Essandoh, Rony Kinnear, Michael McKean, and Celia Imrie, among others.

What The Diplomat Season 2 Might Be About?

The finale of Season 1 of The Diplomat left us on a cliffhanger note. Hal, Stuart, and Merritt’s futures are still uncertain, considering the sudden, brutal attack on Merritt’s car. It is unclear who made it happen and also why Hal so badly wanted to have a meeting with Meritt. All of it adds to more questions than answers, and there is so much to unravel in this context.

Besides that, Kate’s realization about Lenkov’s death hit leads her to the feeling that she and Dennison were merely being used as tools by Prime Minister Trowbridge to fulfill his mission. There is real potential in how she will handle this matter, also in case she does become a Vice President as per Billie’s plans. So, we can expect Kate will be trying to get the truth out about this debacle in The Diplomat Season 2.
