The universal appeal of Erich Maria Remarque’s novel “All Quiet on the Western Front,” written by a World War I veteran, transcends time. The latest movie adaptation of the book is hard proof of that only. Especially given the fact that the novel has already been adapted in the past. In 1930, director Lewis Milestone adapted the book, which even won the best picture award at the Oscars. Later, in 1979 director Delbert Mann turned the book into a CBS Television film.
The 2022 adaptation of the novel has been directed by director Edward Berger, who has previously worked in shows like Deutschland 83 and The Terror. The movie follows young German Soldier Paul Bäumer, who gets to experience the ugliness of war after enlisting in the German army. The time period the movie depicts is the final days of World War I.
“All Quiet on the Western Front” premiered at the 47th Toronto International Film Festival on September 12th, 2022, which followed exclusive theater releases in Paris and New York City on October 7th and an expanded release on October 14th. The movie received widespread critical acclaim for being extremely faithful to Remarque’s novel and bearing an anti-war message. Along with the main story, it also features a parallel, official storyline that covers the negotiation to end the war.

With great reviews, it was Germany’s obvious choice as the official entry for the “best International Feature Film” category at the upcoming Academy Awards, and the movie did make it to the shortlist and final nomination list, unsurprisingly. But that was not it, as it also made it to the “best picture” category. Along with that, it got nods in as many as seven more categories, including in the adapted screenplay category for Beger and his co-writers Lesley Paterson and Ian Stokell, ultimately achieving a total of nine nominations.
ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT CAST:
Austrian actor Felix Kammer leads the cast as Paul Bäumer. This happens to be the debut performance of the twenty-seven-year-old actor. Famous German actors Albrecht Schuch and Devid Striesow are also in the cast, supporting Kammer.
But the most notable name in the cast has to be Daniel Brühl. The Spanish-German actor has no introduction, thanks to his breakout role in Good Bye, Lennin! (2003) and subsequent starring roles in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglorious Bastard (2009) and Ron Howard’s biographical sports film Rush (2016), where he played iconic formula one car driver Niki Lauda. He is also famous for playing the villainous Baron Zemo in various movies and TV series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
