How to Watch “Fool’s Paradise”? Satirical comedy is a genre with a very peculiar yet dedicated fanbase. You can either hate it or love it, there’s no in-between. The latest addition is writer-director comedian Charlie Day’s directorial debut “Fools Paradise.” Charlie Day has made a name for himself in comedy with works like the FX sitcom “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” where he writes and acts. In Fools Paradise, Charlie makes his debut as a director taking on his dream role of a silent actor. The film follows a mute guy with a mental age of 5 who rises in fame after luck strikes.
The story is about a man known as John Doe, who cannot speak but possesses the mental capacity of a five-year-old who has just been released from a mental hospital as the state cannot afford his treatment any longer. He is left to fend for himself on the streets, taking the direction of anyone he comes across. Meanwhile, a movie producer is frustrated with Sir Tom Bingsley, who refuses to leave his trailer while filming a biopic about Billy the Kid. As time and money are essential to film production, the producer hires a stand-in who looks strikingly similar to Bingsley.
Enter Lenny, a struggling publicist who is bribing his way onto studio lots in the hopes of finding new talent. When he sees John Doe working on the set, he thinks his name is “Latte Pronto” due to the Producer’s demand for coffee. John’s life takes a significant turn when Bingsley passes away due to a misguided method acting technique of hanging himself. It prompts the Producer to replace him with Pronto as the star of the film.
Pronto’s lack of acting talent and his tendency to look directly into the camera is challenging for his co-stars. But Christiana Dior and Chad Luxt find themselves inspired by his supposed avant-garde acting style and start to emulate it. Lenny sees an opportunity in Pronto’s newfound fame and decides to propel him into stardom by finding him an agent and representation.
The film showcases Pronto’s rise in fame and his unique friendship with Lenny, which leads to unforgettable events which make up for the whole cinematic experience. The curious case of John being named Pronto and the way his unique way of acting makes waves in Hollywood is really interesting and hilarious to watch.
