How to Watch ‘Suzume’?: If he wasn’t already a household name in Japan, 2016’s mega-hit anime movie, ‘Your Name,’ really put Makoto Shinkai on the world man. Until then, anime, at least in the movie world, was often associated with the gentle moving beauty of Studio Ghibli movies, but Kimi no na wa not just allowed everyone to revel in his breathtaking visuals that featured incredibly detailed storytelling beats but also made everyone aware that every next Shinkai project becomes an instant must-see.
Post-2016, Shinkai returned with his 2019 project ‘Weathering With You’ (Tenki no ko), and while the film wasn’t as well-received as Your Name, it ensured that Shinaki’s grand canvas had more ink to spare. With his latest film, ‘Suzume’ (Suzume no tojimari), Shinkai offers another fascinating adventure that seems to be just as thrilling as it is emotionally satisfying.
Suzume Plot

The new film follows Suzume, a 17-year-old girl whose world is turned upside down when she encounters a mysterious young man in her quiet town in Kyushu. He speaks of a door, and soon Suzume discovers a solitary, weathered door standing tall among ruins. As she reaches for the knob, doors begin to open all across Japan, unleashing destruction and chaos wherever they appear. Suzume realizes that she possesses a unique ability to close these portals and prevent further devastation. The stunning visuals of the stars, sunsets, and morning sky meld together, guiding Suzume on her perilous journey to close the doors and save Japan.
Released to a mostly positive response from both the critics and audiences, Suzume offers a captivating tale of adventure and self-discovery, with critics calling it ‘dazzling’ and ‘delightful’ with the right amount of melodrama, magic, and emotions.
In our review of Suzume, Deborpiya writes, “Suzume never rushes towards its conclusion but chooses to linger on the little journeys that lead up to the inevitable, allowing her to bask in the mundane and the magical with equal reverence.”
Suzume Voice Cast:
Pretty much like all his previous ventures, Suzume packs a star-studded voice cast. Young actor Nanoka Hara headlines the voice cast playing Suzume Iwato. Hokuto Matsumura plays Souta Munakata, Eri Fukatsu plays Tamaki Iwato, and Hakuo Matsumoto plays Hitsujiro Munakata.
Rounding off the cast are Shôta Sometani, Sairi Itô, Kotone Hanase, and Kana Hanazawa.
Is ‘Suzume’ playing in movie theatres?
Yes! Crunchyroll has rolled Suzume out into limited movie theatres across the USA on April 14th, 2023, with plans to expand globally in the coming weeks. If you wish to check out theatre listings or book tickets for the movie, head over to Fandango.
Where Can I stream Suzume movie Online?
As of now, nowhere. The distributors have opted for an exclusive theatrical release seeing the popularity that Shinkai has gathered over the years.
However, if we are to make a calculated guess, there’s a slight chance that Suzume will be available on Crunchyroll (which has now been merged with Funimation) in a few months. There’s no surety to that news, but since the streamer released its previous theatrical venture Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, on the Crunchyroll store with plans to stream on the website, we can expect Suzume to also come out on Crunchyroll by the end of the year.
Please keep a check on this space as we make more updates once we have more news.
