James Gunn speaks on the possibility of a Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC Universe crossover after landing the designation of Co- CEO at DC Studios. Gunn is the new creative mind for DC, becoming one of the comic book giant’s top two executives as co-CEO of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran. The new DC Universe has started making waves with a novel vision for rebooting the film franchise, only making all the comic nerds crazy for more. That vision aims to bring DC closer to its comic book roots, much like the MCU, and it is possible that the two comic book titans are bound for a crossover in the future.

While the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) is centered on a series of superhero films and television series produced by DC Studios and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, it is based on characters that appear in American comic books published by DC Comics. After the making and release of Black Adam and Shazam! Fury of the Gods in January 2023, co-CEOs of DC Studios James Gunn and Peter Safran stated, Shazam! Fury of the Gods will lead right into the events of The Flash.

Speaking with Empire Magazine, Gunn revealed that there is a real possibility that DC and Marvel have a crossover now that he is in charge of DC Studios. While the audacious crossover seems possible now, Gunn is quick to be realistic with expectations and point out that any projects between the two companies are still far away as a possibility as Gunn’s DC Universe needs first to create a solid foundation with a new avatar.

Nonetheless, Gunn concluded on a positive note, confirming that discussions about a potential Marvel and DC crossover have happened in some form.

“I’m certain that’s more likely now that I’m in charge [at DC]. Who knows? That’s many years away, though, I think we have to establish what we’re doing [at DC] first. I would be lying to say that we haven’t discussed it. But all discussions have been very, very light and fun.”
