Oppenheimer is set during World War II and follows Oppenheimer as he leads a team of scientists at Los Alamos, New Mexico, in the development of the atomic bomb. The film also explores Oppenheimer’s struggles as he comes to terms with the implications of his work. The Manhattan Project was a top-secret project that the United States undertook during World War II to develop the atomic bomb. The reason why Nolan choose these specific locations to shoot Oppenheimer is evident because he is a perfectionist.

The result is a masterpiece about the life of an extraordinary physicist and his involvement in shaping human history. Christopher Nolan’s attention to historical accuracy and the choice of remarkable filming locations brought this story to the silver screen.

Santa Fe, New Mexico – The Heart of the Production

Santa Fe, the capital of New Mexico, served as a central filming location for Oppenheimer. Its historical significance added authenticity to the movie’s portrayal of the Trinity Test Site, where the world’s first atom bomb was tested. Nolan spared no effort in capturing the essence of the site and its pivotal role in shaping the course of history.

Code-named Site Y, Los Alamos became the perfect backdrop for depicting J. Robert Oppenheimer’s residence and office and the venue for his groundbreaking experiments. The filmmakers meticulously recreated the ambiance, allowing the audience to immerse themselves in the physicist’s life and work. Obviously, Nolan’s attention to detail extended to recreating the universities where J. Robert Oppenheimer made significant academic contributions.

University of California, Berkeley & Los Angeles

Before leading the Manhattan Project, Oppenheimer established a distinguished academic career as a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1929 to 1943. In fact, the movie captures this phase of his life through authentic settings like Wheeler Hall and the main library, thoughtfully redesigned with vintage lamp posts. The filming locations also include LeConte Hall, which housed his office, and the iconic Campanile Way, contributing to the film’s authenticity.

UCLA played a pivotal role in Oppenheimer’s journey, and the filmmakers took great care to showcase this part of his life. Subsequently, the campus scenes feature Cillian Murphy and Florence Pugh, who portray Jean Tatlock, a physics professor and Oppenheimer’s love interest during his time at UCLA.

Murphy and Damon, representing Oppenheimer and General Leslie Groves, respectively, were filmed exiting the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in military attire, effectively capturing the essence of the military aspect of the Manhattan Project.

Princeton University became another significant filming location where Oppenheimer served as a director from 1947 to 1966. This is where the physicist had a fateful encounter with his contemporary, Albert Einstein, portrayed by Tom Conti in the film. Furthermore, the team filmed in front of the university’s East Pyne library building. It took to the streets of New Jersey for additional post-war scenes.
