Quentin Tarantino’s 9th feature “Once Upon A Time in Hollywood” marks his return to the Palme d’Or race. 25 years ago, Tarantino won the same for Pulp Fiction. Fans were disappointed when the official in-competition list for Palme d’Or was released on 18th April and Tarantino’s 9th feature wasn’t a part of it. However, as it turned out, QT was too busy in the editing room, getting the film ready for the Cannes Premiere and its theatrical release, which is scheduled for July, this year.
“We were afraid the film would not be ready, as it wouldn’t be released until late July, but Quentin Tarantino, who has not left the editing room in four months, is a real, loyal and punctual child of Cannes,” stated Cannes executive Thierry Frémaux, confirming that Tarantino and his film’s cast will be there for the 35mm screening of his film.

“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” stars two of Tarantino repeating stars, he worked with Leonardo DiCaprio in “Django Unchained” and with Brad Pitt “Inglourious Basterds”. The two leading actors play a television actor and his stuntman trying to break into the movie business in 1969 Hollywood. The film also stars Margot Robbie as Sharon Tate and the film is set in the backdrop of the famous Sharon Tate murder by the Manson Family.
Apart from Pulp Fiction, there are other Cannes hall of fame for his cinema. The last time Tarantino competed for the Palme d’Or, it was for his 2009 film Inglourious Basterds, which garnered Christoph Waltz a Best Actor Prize for his menacing turn as Hans Landa.
“His film is a love letter to the Hollywood of his childhood, a rock music tour of 1969, and an ode to cinema as a whole,” “In addition to thanking Quentin and his crew for spending days and nights in the editing room, the festival wants to give special thanks to the teams at Sony Pictures, who made all of this possible.” continued Cannes executive Thierry Frémaux. Sony Pictures is opening “Hollywood” in theaters nationwide July 26.
Another late entrant to Cannes in-competition, is Abdellatif Kechiche. Abdellatif Kechiche like Tarantino, is a Palme d’Or recipient, he won it in 2013 for “Blue is the Warmest Color.” His new film is “Mektoub, My Love: Intermezzo,” which is a sequel to “Mektoub, My Love: Canto Uno.”
The 2019 Cannes Film Festival will run from May 14-25.
