The Bubble Cast: KAREN GILLAN AS CAROL:
Character details: Karen Gillians plays Carol Cobb, who is a little bit of a nightmare actress. In her head she’s the only normal one when clearly she’s also a pain in the ass, but less than most of the others on the team. Director Apatow says that he needed someone semi-sane to be the center of the movie, and that’s Carol Cobb. He also says that Karen Gillan is hilarious and professional and easy to be with. She made everyone on the set laugh and seemed to be having the time of her life. It is a likable character that viewers can relate to.
The Bubble Cast: KEEGAN-MICHAEL KEY AS SEAN:
Character details: Apatow says that “I’ve loved Keegan for a long time and always looked for an opportunity to do something fun with him. We knew we wanted to have someone play an actor who’s very spiritual, maybe they’ve started their own religion. They do all their own stunts. But it’s also about actors getting older, and in a pandemic having way too much free time on their hands to think about their lives and have existential crises about their work and their ego. He was just so funny doing a character. But also there’s a real soul to what he’s doing. And you feel the panic that comes up when we have too much time to think about our lives.”
The Bubble Cast: PEDRO PASCAL AS DIETER:
Character details: “I’m a big fan of Pedro Pascal from Narcos and Wonder Woman. He’s great in everything. One of the casting agents said he would love to do a big comedy. We had this idea of an Oscar-winning performer doing the Cliff Beasts movie as a money grab. He won the Oscar and he wants some cash. He’s really not into being there and gets lonely and bored very fast and just starts trying to find somebody to sleep with him or do drugs with him. And he’s just melting down in the hotel. Pedro was really funny in rehearsals as we figured out who this character was and how that would work.”
The Bubble Cast: LESLIE MANN AS LAUREN:
Character details: “It’s always the best working with Leslie because she’s the funniest. And she had the hardest job because she was shooting a TV series and then sometimes on her sixth and seventh day of the week, she would come to shoot with us. It was really fun having the combination of Leslie and David Duchovny as a couple who met in the movies had an affair, broke up, got married, then broke up again. They’re always fighting or having sex. The chemistry between them was hysterical.”
The Bubble Cast: DAVID DUCHOVNY AS DUSTIN:
Character details: “David and I have been friends for a really long time. We’d always talk about doing a comedy and as soon as I started working on this, I thought, ‘Well this is the one to do with David. He should be the hero of Cliff Beasts. So we tried to design a character that’s a bit of a nightmare because he’s an actor, but he also thinks he is the guardian of the franchise. So he fights everybody about the script, and he’s obsessed with having a very environmentally-friendly message. He doesn’t want to kill the dinosaurs. He thinks we need to let them live. He’s also meant to be an enormous pain in the ass. And David’s just as funny as anybody.”
IRIS APATOW AS KRYSTAL KRIS:
Character Details: “Iris plays a mega TikTok star, who has been forced into the movie, even though she doesn’t know how to act, because she has a lot of followers, purely for marketing. As I was writing the movie, I would ask Iris ‘How do we do this?’ Because my instinct would be like a really funny dumb character. And she was like, ‘It’s not that dad. They’re not dumb. They’re really smart, interesting, and emotional.’ She really developed the character. It was fun for me because we created all these very elaborate group TikTok dances. And so in addition to making Iris act in the movie, we forced her and the cast to take dance lessons every day for months. And then she had a big fight scene. We were all trying to figure out how to get out of the house and be active. So the key is to force your child to learn how to fight and dance.
GUZ KHAN AS HOWIE:
Character Details: “Guz is a rising star in England who I discovered when we went there for casting. We wanted to have someone who would be the Jack Black equivalent of the franchise, the comic relief of the dinosaur movie who’s frustrated being in the hotel. And so much of it is improvisation. And Guz is so hilarious when you just let him go. The only sad thing was he was the character who cracks first and escapes early. We wish he was in all of the movie.”
