The script for What Happens Later was written by Meg Ryan, Steven Dietz, and Kirk Lynn. It is based on Dietz’s 2008 play Shooting Star. David Duchovny, who is best known for his part on The X-Files, plays Bill in the movie, and Meg Ryan plays Willa, who is the main character of the story. Jonathan Duffy, Kelly Williams, Laura D. Smith, and Kristin Mann are the film’s producers, with Duchovny also taking on the role of an executive producer.

The story is about Bill (David Duchovny) and Willa (Meg Ryan), two ex-lovers who get stuck at a small airport overnight because of snow. During an indefinite delay, Willa, a dreamer who likes magic, and Bill, a realist who likes bad things to happen, re-learn how complicated their relationship really is. Both of them are attracted to each other and annoyed by each other, which makes me think of how they interacted many years ago. 

As they try to figure out what happened in their shared past and how their lives now compare to the dreams they used to have, they start to wonder if their reunion is just a chance or if it is part of something more spiritual. Even though What Happens Later has all the typical elements of a romantic comedy, it goes beyond the typical plot points and explores more deeply the complicated relationship between Bill and Willa. It sounds like a story about having deep talks to make peace with the past and admitting your flaws. This love story is really more about the people in it than the romance itself.

In development since 2022, What Happens Later is Meg Ryan’s second directorial venture, following Ithaca in 2015, a film in which she also starred and produced. This marks her return to the big screen after her last romantic comedy film, My Mom’s New Boyfriend, in 2008. Consequently, this film is among the most eagerly anticipated romantic comedies of the year, especially for devoted Meg Ryan fans.

As of now, there is no official update or announcement regarding the streaming release date of What Happens Later. However, it’s worth noting that some of Bleecker Street’s 2023 films have already become available for streaming, renting, or purchasing on various platforms. For instance, movies like The Starling Girl and Mafia Mamma, both from 2023, are currently streaming on Paramount+ with Showtime and can be bought or rented on platforms such as Prime Video, Apple TV, and YouTube. 

These films made their way to Video on Demand (VOD) platforms within 30 to 45 days of their theatrical debut. This suggests that What Happens Later may also receive its digital release in a month or so, potentially in time for the holiday season.
