If you are even slightly into TV shows, especially the ones that somehow make sure that they stand against the conventional tide, you’d be aware of the award-winning HBO series ‘Girls.’ The show didn’t just introduce us to now-famous stars like Adam Driver and Christopher Abbot, it also give us a powerhouse talent in the name of the lead star and show-runner Lena Dunham. ‘Catherine Called Birdy’ is her latest directorial venture, a surprising return for the controversial writer-director after having premiered another film at this year’s Sundance Film Festival called ‘Sharp Stick.’
Adapted from the novel by the same name written by Karen Cushman, the story deals with themes of gender and class while focusing on a young girl’s rebellion against her father’s wish to marry her off. Set in the times of Medieval England, Catherine Called Birdy follows Lady Catherine a.k.a Birdy (played by Bella Ramsey) as she tries to use her quick wit and intelligence to avoid being the pawn of her father’s tryst to regain his Lordship-like status.
Also starring Andrew Scott, Billie Piper, Joe Alwyn, Dean-Charles Chapman, Ralph Insenson, Isis Hainsworth, Archie Renaux, and Lena Dunham herself, the movie was mostly well-received at its premiere and is currently standing at an 81% Rotten Tomatoes score, with critics calling it, “A charming, clever, and altogether delicious comeback film that redefines Dunham in a way that just recently seemed unlikely.”
