Where to Stream ‘Float’?: “Float” is a Canadian drama film released in 2023 and directed by Sherren Lee. The storyline revolves around Waverly, portrayed by Andrea Bang, a young woman grappling with strained familial ties. Opting to spend the summer before commencing university, Waverly seeks refuge with her aunt in the coastal town of Tofino.

There, she becomes entangled in a romantic liaison with lifeguard Blake, played by Robbie Amell, as he guides her through swimming lessons. The ensemble cast also features Andrew Bachelor, Rukiya Bernard, Michelle Krusiec, Sarah Desjardins, Ghazal Azarbad, and Tristan Arthurs. On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 57% of 7 critics’ reviews are positive, with an average rating of 6.3/10.

Richard Crouse gave the film three stars and wrote, “It’s fitting that, given the setting of the film, “Float” is the equivalent of a summer beach read. Despite some clunky, earnest dialogue—’ I want to stay here with you, but I want to be a doctor,’ sounds like a rejected line from a Hallmark movie—the movie does what it set out to do: put a new spin on a classic genre.”

What is ‘Float’ about?

Waverly, played by Andrea Bang, thought she had a very clear picture of her future: she was going to start her medical training in Toronto after a trip to Taipei to see her parents in the summer. But when something unexpected happens that throws off her plans, she changes her mind and goes to a cute Canadian town instead.  There, she meets Blake, a lifeguard from the area, played by Robbie Amell.

Blake saves Waverly from almost drowning at a beach party, which is how they meet for the first time. After that, Blake offers to teach Waverly how to swim, which causes a surprising love to grow between them. But as their relationship grows, Blake’s past relationships and Waverly’s soon-to-be-available job offer make it hard for them to get together. The story, which was based on a novel by Kate Marchant, is about how complicated love, choices, and the unknown future can be.
