We have been chanting ‘love is love’ for the last few decades but to reach this point where the people of the LGBTQIA+ community are somewhat accepted unanimously has taken a long long time. This is to say that it was only a couple of centuries ago that people were being killed for just being different. Yes, the situation is not ideal in present times too, but gradually more and more people are getting more aware and tolerant. Cinema has played a vital role in addressing and creating awareness about the same. Showcasing stories from all kinds of backgrounds is what cinema is all about. One of the latest addition to this kind of cinema is – “My Policeman”.

Based on the book of the same name by Bethan Roberts, the film follows the story of a retired policeman, Tom Burgess in the 1990s, married to a woman named Marion Taylor. Retired schoolteacher Marion one day brings home a stroke patient as a part of her volunteer work, but to Tom’s surprise, that man turns out to be Tom’s ex-lover back in the 1950s when he was also courting Marion.

Flashback to the 1950s, the movie showcases how both men fall in love in a hostile environment. The film beautifully showcases the intricacies of the love triangle and the problems it comes with. But with secrets in an orthodox society comes a lot of issues. Then the movie flashes to the 90s when Patrick comes back into the couple’s life. Patrick’s arrival changes a lot for the couple.

The movie stars Harry Styles as young Tom, Emma Corrin as young Marion, Gina McKee as older Marion, Linus Roache as older Tom, David Dawson as young Patrick, and Rupert Everett as old Patrick. The honest portrayal of forbidden love between both men in an orthodox time is the selling point of this film. All the actors in their respective characters are great. Harry Styles has proven that along with being one of the most sensational voices on the planet he is also a good actor. His growth as an actor is a journey that must be followed.

Where to watch and Stream ‘My Policeman’ Online? 

After having its world premiere at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival in September Amazon Studios is all set to release the My Policeman in a limited capacity across the USA on 21st October 2022. If you want to check out which theatres are playing it near you, please visit Fandango.

As far as streaming is concerned, after a brief run in the theatres, the movie will release on Prime Video on November 4th, 2022.
