Jaume Collet-Serra’s 2009 movie Orphan came off as a surprise that summer. With a twisted third act that not many of us could see coming, the movie was masterful in a way that sprawled a whole lot of movies that wanted to ape the premise. Fast forward 13 years, and we finally have another look at the creepily scary world of Ester. Orphan: First Kill, the prequel to the fan-favorite horror film takes us back to Ester’s life before she met the Colemans.
Pitched as the origin story of a now-renowned movie villain, the movie finds star Isabelle Fuhrman, reprising her role from the original film, with a supporting star cast that includes Julia Stiles, Rossif Sutherland, Matthew Finlan, Hiro Kanagawa, Jade Michael, and Samantha Walkes.
Directed by William Brent Bell (The Boy), the story of Orphan: First Kill revolves around Esther who escapes from an Estonian psychiatric facility, before leaving for America; posing as the daughter of a rich family.
Currently at a 71% Rotten Tomatoes score, Orphan: First Kill is touted as a perfect prequel to a beloved horror movie, with a lot of critics even claiming it to be better than the original. The website’s consensus reads: “Leaning into its ludicrous premise, Orphan: First Kill is a sequel that holds its own — and for fans of campy horror, may even represent an improvement on the original.”
