It is a season of turning short films into full-fledged features. ‘Piggy’, Carlota Pereda’s gruesome horror thriller is one such film. Adapted from her own short film ‘Credita’ from 2018, Piggy is a blood-soaked coming-of-age film that looks through the hellish gates of teenage land.

Following Sara (Laura Galán), in the gorgeous but extremely brutal and hot Spanish country land, Piggy looks at the emotionally hellish and draining life of the teenage girl who is either bullied at school or completely avoided by her parents. Since she is either tortured by kids or completely neglected, Sara has resorted to living a life of absolute isolation.

The film really kicks off when Sara goes to the community pool one day, where she is both bullied by three teenage girls and harassed by a creepy stranger. However, on her way home, she notices that the stranger has kidnapped the girls and it is now on her shoulders to question the moral dilemma of either helping them out or letting them become victims too.

First premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, before wowing audiences at the Fantastic Fest, Piggy has only been gaining more and more momentum – both by its incredible critical response, and a host of audiences looking forward to its theatrical release. Currently at a 90% Rotten Tomatoes score, with the website’s consensus reading “Brought hauntingly to life by Laura Galán’s committed performance, Piggy deftly deploys genre thrills in service of sharp social commentary.”
