Venezuelan director Lorenzo Vigas’s new movie “The Box” became one of the most anticipated movies ever since its premiere at last year’s Venice International Film Festival. The thriller drama, which also competed for the Golden Lion aka the most prestigious prize in the said film festival, eventually went on to become the official Venezuelan entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the upcoming Academy Awards, to be held in March 2023.

Vigas is already a known name in the festival circuit thanks to his brilliant debut From Afar (2015). The Venezuelan drama about the involvement between a wealthy middle-aged man and a young man from a street gang won the Golden Lion at the 72nd Venice International Film Festival. Unsurprisingly, it was also selected as the Venezuelan entry for the Best Foreign Language film category at the 89th Academy Awards although it missed the nomination mark.

Almost seven years later, Vigas is back with his sophomore effort which seems very promising from its inception. Michael Franco and Jorge Harnandez Aldana are producing the film along with Vigas himself. The director is also involved with the writing of the film co-writing the screenplay with Paula Markovitch.

Set under the huge skies and empty landscape of Northern Mexico, The Box follows the journey of Hatzín, a young teenager from Mexico City who is traveling to collect the remains of his dead father. But a chance encounter with a man resembling his father brings hope for him and a twist in the tale for the audience.

After the Venice premiere, The Box has traveled to many other prestigious film festivals from Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) to San Sebastian to BFI London to Tokyo International Film festival. Thanks to the widespread critical acclaim, it stands on a very stable 85% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 20 critic reviews as of now. Most of the reviews have been promising and it has received particular praise for seamlessly blending detective thriller and political drama genres.

The Box Cast:

Debutant actor Hatzín Navarrete is starring as the lead, and has the same name as the actor; while veteran Mexican actor and theatre director Hernán Mendoza, best known for his work in The 4th Company (2016) stars as the man. Actors Elián González, Cristina Zulueta, Dulce Alexa Alfaro, and Graciela Beltrán are rounding up the supporting cast.

As of now, the only way to watch The Box is in a movie theatre. MUBI will be releasing the movie in a limited capacity across selected theatres in the US on November 4th, 2022.

As far as streaming is concerned, audiences who are in check with the fest proceedings have to wait a week to see it online. MUBI, the biggest OTT platform when it comes to niche movies like these has grabbed the distribution rights for this movie and plans to release it as a MUBI release on the 11th of November, 2022.
