What is the Plot of The Promised Land?

In 1755, Captain Ludvig Kahlen, a Danish officer from a poor family, ended his 25-year service in the German Army with a small pension. When he goes back to his home country of Denmark, he gets permission from the Royal Danish Court to build a farming property on the empty moorlands of Jutland. Kahlen wants to build a town on this land, so he asks the Court for a noble title and a house in exchange. As soon as he gets to the planned location, he gets into a fight with Frederik de Schinkel, a cruel magistrate who lives nearby at Hald Manor and is a local judge.

De Schinkel tries to stop Kahlen from doing what he needs to do in many ways, such as by blocking his access to workers. Still, Kahlen hires and hides Johannes Eriksen and his wife, Ann Barbara, who used to be serf farmers and ran away from de Schinkel because he abused them and broke their contract. Despite the fact that it is against the law, he also hires Romani Travelers called “Tatere” as workers. At the same time, Edel Helene, de Schinkel’s cousin and potential bride, doesn’t want to marry him. But her father wants them to get married because de Schinkel is rich unless she can find another partner within a year.
