Irish-language cinema has never been as diligent to go to the cinemas as they did after “The Quiet Girl’ was released In Berlinale earlier this year. The film not only won the Crystal Bear for Generation Kplus International Jury for Best Film but also went on to get a special mention by the festival’s children’s jury. This led to an overpowering box-office result, with the film breaking box office records, becoming the highest-grossing Irish-language film of all time.
Based on Claire Keegan’s 2010 English novella titled ‘Foster,’ The Quiet Girl went on to receive 11 nominations at the 18th Irish Film & Television Awards (IFTAs), out of which it won seven categories. Set in 1981, the movie follows an introverted 9-year-old girl Cáit who lives with her many siblings in a neglected household. When her mother gets pregnant, her parents decide to send her off to live with her middle-aged distant cousin and her husband, where the little girl experiences true love and affection for the first time.
Directed by debutant director Colm Bairéad, The Quiet Girl premiered to a scintillating critical reception, with a 98% Rotten Tomatoes score based on 53 Reviews. The website’s consensus reads, “A remarkable debut for writer-director Colm Bairéad, The Quiet Girl offers a deceptively simple reminder that the smallest stories can leave a large emotional impact.”
When the movie was first screened at Berlinale, the jury called it “A film with a delicate story full of details about childhood, grief, parenthood, and rebuilding a family. The very strong narrative is combined with stunning cinematography. The sound and the images create a unique atmosphere.”
Where to Watch and Stream ‘The Quiet Girl’ Online?
Currently, the only way to watch The Quiet Girl is in a movie theatre. After releasing it in Ireland earlier this year, Super LTD distribution released it in limited movie theatres in California and Los Angeles on December 16th. As far as streaming is concerned, there is no info as to when The Quiet Girl will stream online. Since Super LTD is a subsidiary of Neon (established to handle the company’s more experimental works), it is possible that the movie will eventually land on HULU. As to when that would be is still unknown. However, eager viewers might be able to RENT/BUY the movie on VOD services before it comes on streaming.
