As they say, Twins are as close as two people can be. The bond between twins can be magical but we rarely see something like what was see in the protagonists of The Silent Twins, a movie based on the true life events of June and Jennifer Gibbons.

The English Directorial debut of Polish director Agnieszka Smoczynska (The Lure), The Silent Twins is an eerily beautiful film showcasing the frightening bond between the Gibbons Twins. The twins were the progeny of Caribbean migrants, who moved to England in the 1960s. Being the only black family in their community, they were subjected to bullying in school which led them to shut the world out, literally. Twins had a pact to not speak to anyone except each other. They began showing antisocial behavior and indulged in petty crimes which finally resulted in them being sent to Broadmoor, a mental hospital.

Starring Letitia Wright and Tamara Lawrence, the movie shows the twin’s relationship from the inside view rather than an outsider one as seen in other adaptations of their story. It is based on the book of the same name written by Marjorie Wallace, a journalist who reported their story back in the 1980s and was very close to the twins.

The film also showcases their creative side as they create puppet plays, stories, and diary entries. They loved to write and some of the pieces they wrote back then are now finally ready to be published after being hidden for so long.

The film handles the complex characters of the twins in a very delicate way. As the twins go through different phases of their lives, from facing bullying to shutting out the world to their imagination to exploring their sexuality to imprisonment of sorts at Broadmoor, the film does justice to showing the Twin relationship in a unique way. Both the lead actors are praised by everyone as they put forward one of the best performances of their careers.
