How to Watch The Whale?: For a long period of time, Darren Aronofsky’s ‘The Whale’ was that one movie which had only a single image as its entire promotional campaign. The image of Brendan Fraser, who plays a 600-pound man looking on the side of the frame, went on to first lead us through the “Brenaissance,” a 6-minute long standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival, and a polarizing reaction from the film critics; some of who found its portrayal of obesity problematic.
That is until A24 finally decided to unleash a teaser trailer that allowed us into the world of Charlie. The return of Brendan Fraser to mainstream movie roles was much awaited, and while the American actor has a whole lot lined up on the TV front, everyone’s eyes were on The Whale and what Fraser would do with it. Now that the reactions are out there with everyone, including the ones who did not like the film, praising his performance, the wait for The Whale feels more excruciating.
For the uninitiated, Aronofsky’s movie is based on the award-winning stage play by Samuel D. Hunter, who has adapted it into the movie version and follows Charlie, an obese, recluse English teacher who has been living in his second-floor apartment since he lost his partner. He suffers from guilt and a broken heart, and all of that has been manifested in his body. When we meet him, he is on the verge of cognitive heart failure, so, as a last resort, he reaches out to his estranged daughter in order to make amends. But can life end with forgiveness and empathy in spite of all the wrong we have done? The Whale questions that and more.
Currently, the film is at a 67% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with 132 reviews. The website’s consensus reads, “Held together by a killer Brendan Fraser; The Whale sings a song of empathy that will leave most viewers blubbering.”
The Whale Cast:
The Whale is a chamber piece that takes place almost entirely inside one apartment. The cast is headlined by the return of Brendan Fraser, who plays Charlie. Fraser is well known for playing Rick O’Connell in The Mummy franchise and leading turns in Blast from the Past & Bedazzled.
Sadie Sink, who made heads turn with a fascinating performance in the latest season of Stranger Things, plays Ellie, Charlie’s estranged daughter.
Hong Chau plays Liz, Charlie’s nurse, and his deceased partner’s sister. Chau has had quite a year with important supporting roles in The Menu & Showing Up.
Ty Simpkins plays Thomas, a young preacher who arrives at Charlie’s doorsteps by accident, and Samantha Morton plays Mary, Charlie’s ex-wife, and Ellie’s mother, in a brief role.
Where to Watch and Stream ‘The Whale’ online?
A24, the independent production company that has had quite a year with the mega success of Everything Everywhere All at Once, release the movie in limited theatres across the US on December 9th, 2022.
The Whale is now available to Buy/Rent on all major VOD services like Amazon, Itunes, etc.
As far as subscription-based streaming is concerned, The Whale will most likely land online on Showtime, as most A24 releases go there. As to when that would be is still unknow.
