The Woman King is something that Academy Award Winning actor Viola Davis has never done before. With a filmography that is as versatile as hers, that statement feels like a false claim on its own. However, this true story of the Agojie – an all-female warrior tribe of the Dahomey Amazons feels like a genre Davis was waiting to be the center of.
Maria Bello and Dana Stevens who wrote the story center the plot around an unbeatable army leader named Nanisca (played by Davis). The Woman King is about Nanisca taking the tough task of training the women of the clan to fight invaders from Europe who are trying to swoop up their land.
Directed by ‘The Old Guard’ helmer Gina Prince-Bythewood, Lashana Lynch, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Sheila Atim, Thuso Mbedu, and John Boyega co-star in this action-drama. With a powerful setting that is rounded off by a great star cast, The Woman King feels like a sure-shot winner that offers a proper cinematic escape while also offering a thought-provoking tale.
Currently staying story on the Tomatometer with a 94% approval rating, the website consensus states, “All hail Viola Davis! The Woman King rules,” with critics calling it “A remarkable, powerful film.”
Where to watch and stream ‘The Woman King’ online?
After world premiering at the 47th Toronto International Film Festival, The Woman King is all set to release in movie theatres across the United States on September 16th, 2022, with plans to expand worldwide in the upcoming weeks.
Sony Picture is distributing and releasing the movie, so there’s no news as of yet as to when and where will The Woman King stream online. Chances are, that you can find the movie on Netflix six months after its theatrical debut as per the deal between Sony, Netflix, and Disney. The movie will then move to Dinsey+ after the Netflix rights expire.
