Rain Dogs (Season 1), Episode 6 Recap

Episode 6: Jesus Loves a Hustler

In the refuge home, Costello (Daisy May Cooper) makes a new friend- Jade (Phoebe Thomas). While Jade prays to god to not let her ever be a whining woman, Costello prays for her and Iris (Fleur Tashijian) to get a flat in London. Costello still considers London her home. Jade, however, jokes about the big country house she came from.

Then the two talk about the noises from their rich & greedy neighborโ€™s house. Regardless of participating in this prayer thing, Costello questions its purpose. Doesnโ€™t God like those who help themselves? She asks. Jude says, โ€˜Jesus Loves a Hustler.โ€™ Then, she suggests a way for Costello to earn some money – webcamming. But it will get her under the radar of Serena (Tanya Moodie), and Costello does not want to risk losing their shelter. So she does not accept the offer.

Instead, Costello tries to get a gig as a volunteer in a charity food bank. Over there, she happens to meet Richard (Tom Durant Pritchard), the photographer who took her on a weird date a year ago. Now he works there and gives her a tour to show how the food banking is done.

Meanwhile, Selby (Jack Farthing) tries to reach Costello. He sends a message about how he is trying to change himself in his institution genuinely. He talks about a woman he met inside – Frida (Emily Fairn), who keeps following him. While he calls Frida, his new friend, she removes her panties, trying to seduce him.

Soon after, Frida approaches Selby to help him by assuming the role of psychiatrist. While Selby isnโ€™t the least bit interested in that, she looks around and shares the diagnosis with other patients. He lets her sit next to him. Frida says that she has Borderline Personality Disorder and has suffered through a couple more throughout her life. Selby notices how spending the majority of her life in these confinements has made her gain so much knowledge about it.

However, Frida does not stop there. She shares Selbyโ€™s diagnosis. She says that Selby has an Antisocial personality disorder and daddy issues. Moreover, she claims that he has had only violent relationships. Selby insults her and walks away. At least until then, he hasnโ€™t fully learned how to deal with his rage without abuse.

Gloria (Ronke Adekoluejo) keeps contemplating whether she should keep her baby or get rid of it. She hopes for a miscarriage where she can at least blame her fate instead of her actions. Besides that, thereโ€™s another thing that worries her. Gloria tried to break up with Paul (Sam Hazeldine) three times. However, he still keeps coming back to her. For some reason, he does not get the message and keeps sticking around. It bothers her, and since he is nice and kind, she struggles to tell it straight to his face.

Costello talks about Selbyโ€™s first message in a while. Gloria tells her to keep her distance from him. However, Costello canโ€™t help but feel sympathetic about him. She walks back home while still struggling to sort out Irisโ€™s anger. Back in the refuge, Serena calls Costello to her office. Costello gets worried about whether she is trying to evict her for some wrong behavior. She recounts how she has not broken a single rule. Instead, Serena offers her a forever home in Thanet. Costello refuses it since she wants to leave London.

Besides, Costello gets pissed at Serena for how she is doing this charity work for money under the garb of religion. Later, she goes to volunteer at the food bank and brings up the subject of getting enough money for a flat in London. Seeing the desperation in her eyes, Richard offers 25 quid from his side. She takes it and asks him to pleasure her.

Rain Dogs Season 1 Episode 6

Meanwhile, Gloria invites Paul to her office to break up with him. Gloria had grown accustomed to her lovers abandoning her since she began acting badly toward them. She could not do the same to Paul. She then decides on a more sensible course of action and offers a final goodbye from her side.

Later, she goes to get an abortion at a clinic. Costello joins her and wonders why she is all dressed up and drunk. Gloria wants to break the stereotype of women being miserable for losing their babies. Still, Costello senses that Gloria is in two minds about this decision and talks to her about it. By then, the registrar calls Gloria’s name and says that she canโ€™t have an abortion if she has had alcohol in the few hours before the operations. So Gloria has no other option but to reschedule it.

Back at the refuge, Costello decides to rebel against Serena and partake in webcamming with Jude to earn some money. Turns out, it was for a website called โ€˜Battered Bitchesโ€™ where people with kinks toward damaged women pay to masturbate to their misery. Costello and Jude make up horrible pain and give the perverts what they want โ€“ sadistic pleasure. By that, Costello gets enough money to buy a laptop and a few other things for her and Iris.

Meanwhile, Selby again tries to get in touch with Costello. He seems genuinely remorseful about his past actions. Later, he speaks with the doctor about his wish to make things right with Iris and Costello and rewrite the past. He becomes vulnerable about the fact that no one ever taught him a way to love someone in the right way. The doctor commends his bravery in getting that harsh truth out. That means he has reached at least the stage of acceptance.

Soon after, Frida tells Selby that a woman with a young girl has come to meet him. He gets all excited to meet Costello and Iris. But once he enters that room, he realizes that Frida lied to him. While Frida laughs at this horrible joke, he controls his anger. He seems to have finally reached a stage where he genuinely wants that change in his personality to change for good and to be a better father for Iris than his own father.

Back in the refuge home, the building starts collapsing as if it is an earthquake. All the residents start running out, and it creates chaos outside. Costello goes back to her room and feels good that Iris is safe. She takes some important things with her and rushes out with her.

The next-door posh lady with pashmina also comes out of her house, shocked by what happened. She describes it as if her world has fallen apart. In reality, her house is fine, while their refuge home has become unliveable. So, Costello lashes out at her about how rich people like her keep doing what they want without caring how it will hurt the poor since she goes through no life-shattering change.

Rain Dogs (Season 1), Episode 6 Ending Explained

Does Costello decide to move to another refuge home?

Due to the collapsed refuge home, Serena decides to drive all the women to another place. She is taking them to flats in Skegness. But Costello does not want to leave London. So, she, unfortunately, needs to part ways with Jade. Since they both become fond of each other, they get emotional while saying goodbye.

Soon after, she meets Gloria to take Iris to her place for some time โ€“ until she gets some things sorted out. Gloria says that she has decided to keep the baby. So it seems like, everyone is embracing change in one way or the other. Alas, since Iris is mad at her, Costello gives Gloria some money to take her out to dinner. Gloria understands that Costello is going through a lot and lets her have the day on her own.

Does Costello break her sobriety?

Then, Costello goes somewhere for a drink. She holds a drink and a cigarette in her hand and walks into the bathroom. She notices how she managed to stay sober for more than 500 days. Unfortunately, now she canโ€™t handle the numbing pain. So, she decides to drink her sorrows while listening to Selbyโ€™s message. He expresses how sorry he is to let her down but accepts the absolutely vile nature of the world, which is hard to change.

There is an underlying connection in all their stories. Everyone is embracing the change instead of fighting it. It seems they have made peace with the vile world, as described by Selby, and with the futility of trying to change circumstances beyond their power. Instead, they decide to better themselves so that they can at least be miserable together. This bittersweet and oddly poetic ending becomes an absolute tear-jerker.
