Disney+, Hulu to remove low-performing titles like ‘Willow’

Low-performing titles set to be removed from Disney+, Hulu: The fans will have to say goodbye to dozens of their beloved Disney+ and Hulu titles.

According to the sources, Disney is planning to remove its underperforming titles from the streamers from its bottom line in a bid to write off nearly $2 billion. The finance chief of the conglomerate, Christine McCarthy, revealed this on an earnings call the last week. She also mentioned that Disney expects to take an impairment charge of between $1.5 billion-$1.8 billion on the content that will be removed.

After the news came out, ‘Y: The Last Man’ showrunner Eliza Clark wrote on Twitter, “Well, you work on something for years, pour your heart and soul into it, as do hundreds of other artists. You make it during a global pandemic, far from home. Then it is canceled before it even has a chance to finish airing. Then, it is disappeared,”

With this huge step, they are following a similar move made by Warner Bros. Discovery. They yanked several titles from HBO Max, including Westworld, The Time Traveler’s Wife, Raised by Wolves, and The Gordita Chronicles. The Nevers and many more to stop paying for underperforming titles from their library.

In this first round of reductions, more than 30 shows will be removed starting next week from the platforms – Hulu & Disney+. The titles will vanish starting May 26.
