Charlie Kaufman went to Netflix for his latest mind-scrambler. I’m Thinking of Ending Things is not an easy film to understand but the script is here to make it more legible. Already a winner with the Boston Society of Film Critics followed by nominations from several other regional groups, the screenplay is as meticulous as any other Kaufman joint.
Adapted from Iain Reid’s 2016 best selling novel of the same name, the film follows a woman (played by Jessie Buckley) literally named “young woman” in the script as she accompanies her boyfriend (Jesse Plemons) on a trip to his parent’s house.
However, pretty much like any other Kaufman film, that is not where his themes lie. With a sordid role reversal that gets more and more surreal and intense with every single line uttered, the film takes another existential dive into the human mind.

Also, starring Toni Collette & David Thewlis, the script of I’m Thinking of Ending Things is another masterful work by Kaufman. It is dense, formidably penned, and absolutely awestriking for a major length of its runtime. Kaufman, who won an Academy Award for his script of ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind‘ as well as Spike Jonze’s breathtaking and self-aware ‘Adaptation’ will probably get a nod this time around too.
The screenplay, on the other hand, is a thing of beauty. It is a perfect place to be for someone who wants to understand Kaufman’s process as a screenwriter. Among its lengthy takes, the entire sequence at Jake’s house is a razor-sharp and crisply written set that can be used as examples in film schools.
Among other things, the script answers a lot of bewildering questions that viewers might have had while watching the out of context third act of Kaufman’s latest creation. I’ll leave you to it before it vanishes and there’s nothing left here to see.
