Not Dead Yet (Season 1) Episode 9 Recap:

In the latest episode of Season 1 of “Not Dead Yet,” we see Nell reclining on a couch while being interviewed by her therapist. The therapist asks Nell if she has ever attempted to connect with her inner child. Meanwhile, Sam and Denis are puzzled as to why Nell is lying on a couch in the hallway of an office, which is typically a spot for people to fart. Despite their curiosity, Nell orders them to leave her be, as she is focused on her work.

As it turns out, the therapist is actually a ghost who inquires if Nell has ever confided in her friends about her ability to see ghosts. Nell responds by sharing the ghost therapistโ€™s obituary with Denis via email, ultimately stopping the โ€˜session.โ€™ This event sets the stage for a new story that delves into Nell’s struggles in life.

Nell and Edward are enjoying a pleasant conversation at the Cricket’s bar when Cricket announces that she is finally prepared to scatter her late husband Monty’s ashes. As she was sorting through his belongings, she came across Monty’s hat, which she thought would be fitting for Edward. Nell takes a close look at the hat and calls out Montyโ€™s name in a shocked tone. Cricket is taken aback by Nell’s reaction, but Nell quickly changes the subject. The three of them then decide to scatter Monty’s ashes together before Cricket changes her mind.

Meanwhile, Ben, Denis’s husband, pays a visit to the office to meet Sam and Lexi. Ben and Denis are excited about their journey toward parenthood through surrogacy. While Ben has already made his sperm donation to the bank, the crucial decision of selecting the right surrogate mother rests on Denis’s shoulders. Denis feels anxious about his indecisiveness, fearing that he won’t be able to choose anyone by the end of the day as his husband expects him to. Seeking assistance, he turns to his mommy friends, Sam and Lexi, who almost immediately agree to help him.

Cricket arrives at Nell’s apartment carrying a bowling bag that contains Monty’s ashes in an urn. Nell and Edward are ready to go, but Cricket has a long list of potential locations where she believes it would be appropriate for Monty’s final resting place. Nell is surprised by the list and simultaneously sees the ghost of Monty. She makes an excuse to leave the room, claiming that she needs to find her phone charger, and heads to her bedroom. Monty follows her there, and after learning of his wife’s plans, he informs Nell that he wishes for his remains to be scattered in the Valleys of Ohio.

Monty expresses his desire for Nell to inform Cricket about his preferred resting place, but Nell is hesitant. She explains that if she were to tell Cricket about Monty’s wishes, she would also have to reveal the fact that she sees ghosts, which would make her appear insane.

Upon returning to her friends, Nell suggests that Ohio could be a final resting place for Monty, but Cricket has a different idea. She suggests consulting her psychic, who is an expert in communicating with dead people and speaking to the psychic may be helpful in determining Monty’s wishes for his resting place.

The next scene shows Denis giving a PowerPoint presentation of three potential surrogate mothers that he has selected. He believes these women to be ideal candidates, but Sam and Lexi offer their opinions and ultimately reject all three candidates. Denis becomes increasingly worried, as it took him three months to narrow down the selection to these three individuals. He becomes even more anxious because he needs to choose the right surrogate mother by the end of the evening.

Meanwhile, Cricket, Nell, and Edward visit Casandra, the psychic expert. Nell appears visibly anxious because she is worried that Cricket may suspect that she has the ability to see ghosts, which could lead to her being viewed as crazy.

The session with Cassandra begins with everyone joining hands. However, instead of sensing Monty’s presence, she senses Edward’s dead golden retriever. Cricket redirects the focus to Monty’s ashes and asks Cassandra where she should scatter them. Cassandra, without giving it much thought, suggests the beach. Monty’s ghost is not pleased with this idea, as he does not want to spend eternity with sand on his butt crack.

At the office, Sam and Lexi come across a woman who shares similar personality traits to Denis, and they believe she would be a perfect fit to be the surrogate mother. However, Denis becomes increasingly nervous and ultimately rejects her.

At the same time, Nell returns to Cassandra and accuses her of being a fake and manipulating her clients’ vulnerability. However, Cassandra explains that she doesn’t really see dead people but rather reflects the beliefs of her clients, who are often afraid to trust themselves. She also notices that Nell has a secret that she’s reluctant to share with her friends. Learning that Cassandra can uncover her thoughts so easily puts Nell in a difficult position, and she must decide whether or not to reveal her secret to her friends, particularly Cricket, given the current circumstances.

Not Dead Yet (Season 1), Episode 9 Ending, Explained:

Does Nell tell Cricket that she can see her dead husband?

As Cricket, Nell, and Edward arrive at the beach to scatter the ashes, Monty’s ghost keeps urging Nell to come clean to his wife. However, Nell is too nervous about doing so and ends up babbling nonsense whenever she tries. Meanwhile, Cricket is adamant about scattering Monty’s ashes on the beach and is well-prepared with all the necessary items. When Cricket leaves the car to get a parking ticket, Edward notices Nell’s strange behavior and asks her what’s wrong.

After snapping at Edward, Nell feels like she’s on the verge of revealing something to Cricket, but she’s too nervous about speaking up. When Cricket returns, Edward asks her why she thinks the beach is the right spot for Monty’s resting place. Cricket tells them how she used to drive around aimlessly after Monty died until she found a spot at the beach where she felt happy and at peace. She would come there every day at sunset and listen to the joyful music coming from a nearby restaurant. Monty’s ghost nods at Nell to agree with Cricket’s intention, and Nell reassures Cricket that scattering Monty’s ashes at the beach is the right choice.

Lexi and Sam arrange a meeting with Ben for Denis, who is feeling down about not being able to find the perfect surrogate mother. As soon as he sees Ben, Denis confides in him about the unease he has been experiencing during the surrogacy process, wondering how much of each of them would be in the child. Ben reassures Denis that he just wants to be a parent with him and doesn’t care how they have the baby. This leads them to decide to adopt a child, which makes Sam and Lexi ecstatic with joy.

As Nell and Monty watch Cricket from afar, they both come to a realization that they were too wrapped up in their own thoughts and forgot about what was important to Cricket. Monty had been solely focused on himself and his past with Cricket, clinging onto memories and worrying about her future without him. Nell admits to Monty that she had also been caught up in her own issues and hadn’t been fully present for her friend.

She adds that if she had revealed to Cricket that she could communicate with Monty’s ghost, it would have caused Cricket to reevaluate her decisions and hold onto the memory of her dead husband even more tightly. Monty asks Nell if she is ready to tell her friend that she can communicate with the dead. He wonders if this ability is real or if it is just a crazy notion.

Nell chuckles and explains that she learned from a wise and intuitive woman that she doesn’t need to prove or disprove anything that is meaningful to her. Monty expresses his regret that Nell couldn’t share her truth with her friend, but Nell reveals that she actually did share her secret with Monty. It was time for Nell to bid farewell to the old man who had become a dear friend to her. As she looks at Cricket, Nell realizes that the two friends have said their goodbyes. She sees Monty waving to her, standing next to his wife, who is taking her moment to say goodbye to her husband one last time.

In the final scene, Edward pays a visit to Casandra, but she seems visibly irritated by his presence. He starts talking about his deceased pet dog, Buster, perhaps trying to lighten the mood or make a connection. The scene ends with Casandra asking Edward to leave because she is through with him and his stories about Buster.
