Pechi (2024) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:

“Pechi” opens with a couple trekking through Aranmani Kaadu, a dense forest. The girl, feeling tired, asks her boyfriend, Ram, to set up camp for the day. As night approaches, Ram leaves to gather more logs for the campfire. While he’s gone, the girl puts on her earphones and relaxes by the flickering flames. Nearby, Ram spots a sturdy branch and approaches it. However, he accidentally steps on a trident hidden in the underbrush.

Startled, he throws the trident aside and cuts the branch. Suddenly, something strange happens: a part of the tree breaks away, and a dark liquid that looks like blood drips onto Ram’s face. To his shock, a voodoo doll falls from the severed branch. Just then, Ram senses something ominous stalking him, and before he can react, he is attacked and killed. The girl hears Ram’s screams and picks up the voodoo doll. Tragically, the same unseen force also kills her.

What do Charu and Sethu discover in the forest?

Soon after this incident, a group of five trekkers decides to explore the unexplored areas of Aranmani Kaadu with the help of a local guide, Maari. Despite Meena’s reservations about taking Maari along, Charan convinces her of Maari’s expertise. The next day, Maari joins the group midway. But Maari’s daughter stops their car to place a protective chain around his neck before they set off. Since the area is restricted, Maari instructs the group to park near his friend’s house. While they wait, a suspicious local passes by, but Maari seems to know him. After seeking the forest’s blessing, Maari leads the group into the wilderness, ready for the adventure ahead.

As the group treks, they stumble upon a stream, sparking excitement in Meena and Charu. A playful Meena splashes water, but Maari cautions her to keep quiet as the area attracts wildlife. So Charan urges Meena to listen to Maari. Once out of the water, Meena argues with Maari, insisting they are professional trekkers and can handle the forest. Taking a break, Jerry lights a cigarette, prompting Charu to throw stones at him in annoyance.

One stone misses and strikes a bell hidden in the bushes. Curious, Charu and Sethu clear the foliage to reveal a row of bells. Eagerly, Sethu touches the frame, causing it to fall and ring loudly. When Maari warns them to stay away due to restrictions, Meena clashes with him again. Now, Charan steps in, demanding that Maari reveal the reason for the limits. Reluctantly, Maari mentions an evil spirit in the area. The group laughs off his warning. Finally, Charan convinces everyone to reach the summit first and deal with Maari later.

The group quietly ascends the trail, but Charu wanders off after hearing a noise in the bushes. Climbing onto a stone for a better view, she suddenly feels herself getting pushed off the edge. Luckily, Maari arrives just in time to save her. Despite Charu’s detour, the group reaches the summit safely. After setting up camp, Jerry and the others chase Meena to take her picture. Suddenly, Jerry trips, and his glasses fall off. When Jerry finally picks them up, his friends have vanished. Given their teasing nature, Jerry decides to search for them.

Suddenly, something grabs Jerry’s leg, causing him to fall. Now, Jerry is extremely terrified of the forest. When Jerry recounts the incident, nobody believes him. Determined to prove himself, Jerry challenges Charu and Sethu to venture into the restricted area, tie a scarf there, film a video, and return without getting scared. Hearing this, Maari becomes furious and tries to stop them. Ignoring warnings, Charu and Sethu venture into a restricted area.

Soon, they discover an old house filled with voodoo dolls. While exploring, Charu notices a doll on the floor, now stuck to the wall. Laughing at Jerry’s dare, she picks it up to take a selfie. However, when she turns on her phone, an old lady appears in the frame, making her scared. Concerned, Maari and Charan search for the duo. As they approach the restricted area, they suddenly hear Charu’s scream and rush towards the sound.

To their horror, they find Charu’s face covered in blood. Just then, she opens her eyes, and Sethu emerges from behind a tree and laughs, looking at Maari and Charan. Furious with the prank, Maari and Charan return to the campsite, where they find Charu shivering in fear. The anxiety increases as Charan and Maari exchange glances, questioning who they might have encountered on their way.

Who is Pechi?

The group seeks answers from Maari, who recounts the tale of Pechi. Years ago, a young girl named Pechi was drawn to the dark arts and practiced black magic. To sharpen her skills, she traveled to Kerala. Now an old, unbeatable witch, Pechi lives in the forest. Villagers knew Pechi’s dark arts but not her human sacrifices. Realizing the truth, the villagers approached the village head for a solution.

Two brave men confronted Pechi in her forest home, but she used a voodoo doll to kill them. Desperate, the villagers turned to a priest, who explained that Pechi had gained immortality through black magic. In this dark practice, she must sacrifice humans to sustain her life, with the age of each victim adding to her own. The only way to stop Pechi is to trap her in a voodoo doll.

The priest agrees to help, but they must kill Pechi first. A group of villagers are sent to kill Pechi and her followers. These villagers learn how to evade Pechi’s attacks—by avoiding eye contact. They succeed in killing her, and the priest traps Pechi’s spirit in a doll, nailing the doll to a tree in the forest. The villagers perform rituals and vow never to enter the area again. Over the years, the barriers around the tree have decayed. When Ram cuts a log nearby, Pechi is inadvertently set free. Since the group is experiencing strange phenomena, they decide to leave.

How does Maari save Charan?

Jerry realizes he has left his camera ahead of the campsite, but Maari tries to convince Jerry to forget it. However, Jerry insists on taking the camera, so Maari accompanies him. As Jerry picks up the camera, he sees a clip of himself approaching it and feels afraid. Looking up, he spots another Maari behind the real one, gesturing that the man he sees before him isn’t the true Maari; confused and scared, Jerry bolts.

The path leads him to Pechi’s house, where he is unnerved by the sight of voodoo dolls. Suddenly, Pechi appears and kills him. Meanwhile, Charan and Maari search for Jerry and stumble upon a camera. They watch footage of Ram and his girlfriend being attacked. Alarmed, Maari insists they leave immediately, but Sethu and Meena accuse him of wanting to harm them. Enraged, Sethu chases Maari and strikes him.

At the same time, the hypnotized Charu wanders into the forest, banging her head against a tree. As this happens, Meena and Charan witness an unknown force attacking Charu, so they flee. Now, Maari hears the group scream and rushes toward them. Suddenly feeling watched, Maari closes his eyes, and the unknown force disappears. Maari believes the protective chain around his neck shields him from Pechi. When Meena enters Pechi’s house, Sethu runs across the barrier. Suddenly, Jerry appears bleeding and bruised.

Thus, Sethu crosses the barrier to help him, but Jerry goes quiet as they near the border. Instantly, Sethu glances at Jerry and sees Pechi instead, resulting in Sethu’s death. Then, Sethu’s scream jolts Meena out of her trance, and Charan assists her. Determined to save the trekkers, Maari crosses the barrier again and urges Charan and Meena to trust him.

Moreover, he reveals the chain’s protective properties, which were given to him by his ancestors to guard against Pechi. Despite Meena’s reluctance, Charan persuades her to accompany Maari. Finally, he warns them not to let go of his hand or get distracted. As they cross the barrier, Meena slips and falls. In that moment, Charan, against Maari’s warning, rushes in to save Meena.

Pechi (2024) Movie Ending Explained:

Why didn’t Pechi harm Meena?

Charan can’t find Meena. But when Pechi tries to attack him, she can’t. Suddenly, Charan discovers Maari’s protective chain hidden in his jacket. Now, Charan realizes that Maari has given him this chain to protect him from Pechi. Determined to find Maari, Charan runs but finds Maari leaning against a tree, covered in blood and lifeless. Afraid, Charan ensures the protective chain stays safe as he rests his eyes, thinking about Meena.

After a while, Charan hears a car approaching, rushes down, and sees the driver they saw before starting the trek. To his surprise, Charan spots Meena in the car. The scene shifts to Charan tied up in Pechi’s house. As Charan struggles, Meena enters. In a flashback, we see Meena on various treks, eventually meeting Charan. They start dating, and Charan excitedly suggests their next adventure to Aranmani Kaadu, and the whole group agrees.

Another flashback shows an old woman telling Meena about Pechi’s return. The villagers didn’t know she had survived their attacks. Despite searching, the woman couldn’t identify the tree where Pechi was nailed. Earlier in the story, a priest informs the villagers that Pechi needs to kill 13 more people before she will stop. It becomes Meena’s responsibility to help Pechi find these victims. When Maari gives Charan the protective chain, Meena kills Maari. After Pechi completes the 13 sacrifices, Meena will become Pechi’s successor. The final scene shows another group discussing visiting the forest, as someone’s brother has gone missing there.

The last scene suggests that Charan’s brother is probably arriving at the forest to find and rescue him. It turns out Meena has orchestrated the whole thing. Charan is probably alive to lure the next group of people to make sacrifices. Meena is Pechi’s disciple and will be her successor. Meena started trekking only to make sure she found people for Pechi. When Meena left the forest, she didn’t know Charan was alive and assumed Pechi would have killed him. Since Meena has killed Maari, she believes her work is done. So, by seeking help, Charan made things easier for Meena to ensure he was sacrificed to Pechi. The ending could also suggest a sequel, probably concluding Pechi’s story and showing Meena as the black magic witch.
