Signed, Sealed, Delivered: A Tale of Three Letters (2024) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:
The film opens with Oliver and Shane returning from their honeymoon. Oliver shares how they met with a random stranger on the flight. The stranger, however, has surely lost interest in their love story, while Shane sleeps peacefully throughout the journey. When they return to the office, where they work alongside Norman and Rita, Oliver finds out that they have a big task ahead of them because the letters from the Great Mailbox Breach in 2017 have made their way back to them.
There are 25 undelivered letters, including one with the most damage of them all. Norman has created machinery that will take around six months to remove the mold and flakes surrounding the letter. Meanwhile, the teamโs primary objective is to find the recipients of the remaining 24 letters. Oliver, Shane, Norman, and Rita have their own personal issues to sort out, along with Charley, one of their youngest associates. Charley has recently become a single mother to her son, Eleanor.
Why do Oliver and Shane Need a Couple Counselor?
Six months have passed. Oliver and Shane start to argue over things. Just like every other newly married couple, they start to face the difficulties of marriage. Oliver lives in a house that is of great historical value and is protected by the State Historical Society. It all sounds so fascinating. However, the problem with historical places is that they are only good for the eyes. One can not live in such places forever. Also, if Shane wants her bedroom window open, she cannot do so because the crank of the window is lost. Now, to make any change to that, a green light must be given by a certain committee that takes care of the property.
So, basically, Shane cannot even extend the closet as she likes. She can’t decorate the house as she pleases because any change inside the house requires the committeeโs thumbs-up. Also, Oliverโs constant chatter about his familyโs history, how his grandfather’s clock has never stopped functioning for over a century, and how a chair owned by his father lasted for decades start exhausting Shane in ways Oliver fails to imagine. When Oliver finally feels that Shane is distancing herself from him, he talks to Norman, who gives his nephewโs number, who is a couple counselor.
What Caused the Great Mailbox Breach in 2017?
On the work front, the team has successfully delivered 22 letters to their recipients. Now, they are left with only three letters. Among them, one letter was unfortunately posted by Shane, and it came back recently. The recipient’s full name is, however, beyond the readability stage. But Charley says that she has a confession to make. She says that during her high school days, she used to be friends with Marlon and Barry, who always came up with some new pranks. When her turn came, she thought of something funny yet risky. She says that she has planned to put a clock inside the mailbox so that the mailman can be pranked.
However, hearing the ticking sound, the mailman thought that there was a time bomb inside the mailbox. Hence, he called the police, and since law enforcement was involved, no one dared to confess during that time. Listening to this, Oliver becomes angry as he wants to suspend Charley right at that moment. But Shane tries to make him understand that even if it was a crime, there was no harmful intention behind it. Moreover, since no one was harmed and almost 22 letters have reached their recipients, Therefore, Charley is not punished. Now, the final task of delivering the remaining three letters still remains for the team.
What does Charley Learn from her Letter?
With time, they get to know that the recipient of one of the three letters is Maria while Rita is working on the other letter, which only has a readable address. When Rita finally discovers the address, they realize that the letter is for Charley. Oliver, Shane, Rita, and Norman all go to Ritaโs house, where Charley stays with Eleanor, and hand her the letter. Charley reads out the letter and realizes that it is a love letter written by either Marlon or Barry. There are spelling mistakes throughout the letter, and Charley confirms that it is written by Barry.
Apart from Oliver, everyone insists that she find Barry, and Shane is willing to help. Oliver reminds her that they should not interfere with someoneโs private life. They had a task to deliver the letter, and since it was done, they should not think of it now. Subsequently, Oliver and Shane start to visit the couple’s counselor, Dr. Kallis. She starts giving them some particular tasks. The couple tries to heal their relationship by performing them. Meanwhile, the team comes up with an idea to locate the recipient of the second letter.
What do the Postbales find out about Maria?
The Postbales takes a different approach, and now she contacts directly with the sender of the letter. Rita, Norman, and Charley meet with one Mrs. Philpott, who works in a flower shop. She has written this letter to Maria with sheer disappointment and anger. When confronted, she tells them that Maria was a very bright student and that to secure her spot in the game, she needed to score good grades. But, on her final exam, Maria failed. Her college scout had come just to see her play. Since she had failed, she was not allowed to play. Therefore, Maria begged Philpott to increase her grades as her coach would not allow her to play despite the fact that she was a good player.
Philpott, on the other hand, had recently found out about her cancer, and she needed to go to her first chemo session. She decides not to increase her grades, so Maria creates a ruckus inside Philpottโs office. The police were involved, and Maria was taken into custody for creating violence inside the school perimeter. Philpott had written the letter only after that. Now she regrets writing such a letter to Maria. She asks Norman not to deliver the letter. But since it has the stamp, the Postables must deliver the letter. Rita comes up with the idea that Philpott can write another letter saying what she actually feels now, and they can deliver that, too.
From Philpott, they learn about Tobby, who used to date Maria, and from the 2017 batch history, the Postables find Tobby Salinger. Now, Shane throws an arrow in the dark, thinking that if Maria had married Tobby, she must now be Maria Salinger. This works as they find the Maria of the letter. Oliver and Shane go to deliver the old and the new letters to Maria. They learn that Maria helps people adopt children. Since Norman and Rita are looking for a child to adopt, this comes as an advantage as they adopt a girl. Despite carrying a heart disease, with Oliver and Shaneโs support, they decide to move along with the adoption.
Signed, Sealed, Delivered: A Tale of Three Letters (2024) Movie Ending Explained:
Were the Postables Able to Deliver the Final Letter?
At the end of the film, when Norman finally opens the remaining letter, the writing inside the letter is quite unreadable, so they leave it on the dashboard. Before this, Charley had already met with Barry, and when they talked about the letter, Barry confessed that he only wrote the letter as a prank. But it was Marlon who truly had feelings for her. Knowing about this, Shane had already contacted Marlon and asked him to come over to the office. When Marlon arrives, Charley is shocked to see him. Marlon explains to her that since he failed to stop Barry from posting that letter in 2017, he had written another letter at that time.
On the dashboard, it was the same letter that Marlon had written back then, which Charley could only read because she could understand his handwriting. Charley read in silence that Marlon had written this letter to tell her how much he had loved her. But he wished to say this in front of her, not through some letter. So, when Barry made the prank, he was not ready to tell her in person then. Now, while holding Eleanor in his arms, Marlon and Charley share a romantic moment together, which makes the Postables happy.
In the end, upon their return home, Oliver and Shane perform their last assignment given by Dr. Kallis by surprising each other. Oliver surprises Shane with old memoirs, including the decision to move out of their old historical place, which definitely pleases Shane more than anyone at that moment. After that, when Shaneโs turn comes, she tells Oliver that they are soon going to be parents, which definitely supersedes Oliverโs surprise. Overall, the couple is just moments away from starting a new life altogether, with a new journey awaiting them.
