(Un)lucky Sisters (2024) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:
What do Jess and Angela Find at their Dadโs Place?
As the title hints, the film revolves around two sisters, Jess and Angela. Despite being siblings, they havenโt seen each other in years, and itโs safe to say theyโve grown pretty distant. Their estrangement also extends to their father, Alejandro, so much so that they can barely remember his appearance. Their paths cross again when they receive the news that Alejandro has passed away.
Alejandroโs longtime assistant, Inesita, who worked for him for 25 years, fills the sisters in on their dadโs last days. She explains that Alejandro wasnโt in great shape, mainly due to some heavy allegations against him. As for Jess, she isnโt too interested in the sob story and is more focused on whether their dad left anything behind for them. To her disappointment, sheโs told that the only thing Alejandro owned at the time of his death was his house.
Alejandro wasnโt just any man but actually a big deal, with friends in all the right places. You can sense he is someone important when the mayor himself shows up at the funeral, reassuring Jess and Angela that heโs just a call away if they ever need anything. Moreover, Alejandroโs house isnโt some tiny, one-bedroom flat. It is a lavish apartment that people spend their entire lives dreaming of. So, what was Alejandroโs secret to living large?
When the girls ask about it, Inesita vaguely hints that Alejandro was a โfacilitatorโ who made things happen for needy people. Itโs strange, and at first, it doesnโt make much sense. But when you see the crowd at his funeral, itโs clear he was someone powerful. Things get really interesting when Jess and Angela stumble upon a closet full of cash in their dadโs apartment. Jess, whoโs dead broke, sees it as her ticket out of financial ruin. However, Angela is worried that the money might be stolen or that maybe their dad was holding it for someone else.
What do the Girls do with the Money?
Angela and Jess cross paths with Mr. Osterfil, and their instincts immediately kick in. Something about him, an unspoken menace, makes them suspect he knows about the stash of cash they found in the closet. Maybe itโs even his money. Osterfil appears to be shady, as his face is plastered all over the news, tied to bribery and extortion cases. In simple terms, he’s definitely not the kind of guy you want to mess with. The lure of the cash is too strong to resist. Angela, the more cautious of the two, insists they keep things low-key and contained, only buying what they need and staying under the radar. Sadly, Jess has never followed the rules. She goes on a spending spree, buying a new phone, designer clothes, and fancy shoes, completely ignoring Angela’s warnings.
Why Do the Police Let Jess Go?
Omar Chichi arrives at Angelaโs workplace one day and tells her he must swing by the apartment to grab an “item” for his election campaign. Maybe it is Omar, for whom Alejandro was holding onto the money. This shatters Jessโs plans; she has been banking on that cash to solve all her problems. Desperate, Jess suggests they keep a few stacks for themselves, but Angela says they cannot do that. So, Jess sneaks off and steals a dozen stacks for herself. Angela realizes she canโt change Jessโs mind, so she decides to help her sister cover their tracks and keep them both out of trouble.
The sisters have a heated argument over their father. Jess rips into him, calling him a deadbeat who never cared about his kids or wife. Angela defends him, saying he was a great man who did his best. As things get ugly, they start throwing harsh words at each other. Ultimately, they decide to split the money and go their separate ways.
Jess decides to skip town before the cops or Omarโs men catch up with her and head straight to the airport. Sadly, during a security check, she gets arrested for carrying stacks of foreign cash. Angela rushes to the station, discovering that Jess is being charged with smuggling and currency trafficking. With no other option, Jess makes a deal with the cops. She hands over her suitcase full of cash in exchange for Angelaโs freedom. The cops take the case, agree to drop all charges, and Angela walks out scot-free.
(Un)lucky Sisters (2024) Movie Ending Explained:
What Did Omar Want?
When Jess and Angela get back to the apartment, theyโre met by a crowd, including Inesita and Omar, whoโve been waiting for them downstairs. Once inside the flat, Inesita hands Omar what he is really after. Surprisingly, this happens to be a ledger, not the cash they all thought. It turns out that the item Alejandro had been holding for Omar wasnโt stacks of money but a diary. Jess and Angela checked the closet; fortunately, the money remained there.
But theyโre also conveyed the bad news that the court has ordered the house to be auctioned off, and they need to clear out by the end of the week. No one, except Jess and Angela, seems to know about the cash, so they leave the place, taking all the money with them. They buy themselves a comfortable beachside house, ready to relax and enjoy their new life. However, they donโt keep all the loot for themselves and anonymously gift their friends and family a decent chunk to remind everyone that thereโs still some good left in this selfish world.
