What We Do in the Shadows (Season 5), Episodes 9 & 10 Recap:
Episode 9: A Weekend at Morrigan Manor
Guillermo (Harvey Guillen) is not the only one from the vampire residence to face neglect from his housemates. The Guide (Kristen Schaal) also keeps getting embarrassed by the vampires, who often ignore her. Nevertheless, she informs them about a note from a certain someone named Perdita Morrigan. Turns out, she is a big deal in the vampire community. So, they all naturally get excited about being invited to the Morrigan Manor even if it is for the guideโs gallery opening. Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch) reaches there with a moustache. He says he grew it by shaving three times a day. The guide soon arrives and brings them all in.ย
Once the vampires enter the Morrigan Manor, the guide shares a message from Perdita saying she wonโt be able to make it there. But she asks them to have each otherโs backs. Since Perdita cannot come, the vampires decide to go to slumber. The second night, Laszlo (Matt Berry) practices his sword fighting skills by himself. The guide asks if she could join him in the practice and he refuses. Then, a group of swordspersons arrive to fight with him. While Laszlo starts off on a good note, he faces defeat. On the other hand, Nandor (Kayvan Novak) and Colin try to play chess even if they donโt know how to.ย
The guide reads out a letter from the hostess about a treasure hunt. She shows them the portraits she painted of them. But they do not respect her in any way. Since Nadja cannot find Laszlo, the guide decides to help her. But along the way, Nadja suffers an accident. Meanwhile, Nandor goes out with Guillermo to see several released people running away. He believes they will have the upper hand in finding the treasure. So, he does not mind asking Guillermo to smell their undies to trace them by smell. Guillermo says he will go find them but goes back to the manor instead.ย
While trying to locate Guillermo and the pack of humans, Nandor notices the guide on the side, suffering from an accident. He still chooses to run away instead of helping her. Unfortunately, he falls into a trap. In the manor, Guillermo cannot find anyone besides Colin. When he asks Colin about it, Colin questions him back. He suspects Guillermo is the mastermind who lured them into the manor under false pretencses. Soon, he realises loopholes in his theory and stops speaking. Then, the guide shows up in the room and sees that Colin still does not value her, just like other vampires. So, she drops him down to the basement. He ends up in a cage just like other vampires.
How does Nandor learn that Guillermo became a half-vampire?
Turns out, the guide was the mastermind, who did all of it out of her anger towards the constant neglect from the vampires. Besides Guillermo, no one showed her even the smallest amount of kindness even if she has been nothing but helpful to them. Thatโs why she decided to go to such lengths to make them realise her worth. She even lied to Nadja about her hex just so they would have at least some topic to bond over with. During her emotional outpour, the guide eventually blurts out that Guillermo needs to take matters into his own hands to be one like them. So, Guillermo finally decides to be honest with Nandor. He tells about vampiric transformation, which makes Nandor furious.ย
Once he comes out, Nandor plans to kill Guillermo. Then, Laszlo suddenly recalls a conversation they had about the guide. It makes her feel that they value her. So, she starts letting them leave one by one. But before Nandor could come out, Guillermo disappears into thin air. In the post-credits scene, we realise that the dialogue praising the guide was apparently meant to lure Colin into having a relationship with her, thus, leaving them for good.ย
Episode 10: Exit Interview
Does Nandor take Guillermo’s life?
After running away from Nandor, Guillermo went to Derek and decided to lay low at a motel for the time being. He tells Derek not to reveal his location to anyone else. But Nadja tricks Derek into finding Guillermo. She shows up at his doorstep and sees him disrespect Derek. So, she warns him about the repercussions if something bad happens to Derek. Then, the topic ultimately comes to Nandorโs anger. She says that thereโs no way his anger would settle. Later, Colin stops by and offers good luck. He then proceeds to take Guillermoโs exit interview from his job as a familiar. Guillermo concludes the interview even before answering all the questions.ย
Soon after, Laszlo shows up to tell Guillermo something important. But he gets so immersed in watching the TV that he forgets to tell what he came to say. Meanwhile, Nandor roams the streets with rage and stumbles upon Patton Oswalt. He almost chokes Paton to death. After learning that Paton is also an actor like John Slattery, he lets the man go. They go sit at a cafรฉ where Nandor talks about his friendship with Guillermo. Paton starts talking about himself and Nandor makes him stop. By the end of the night, Paton realises that Nandorโs friendship with Guillermo is very special. So, he suggests Nandor should not kill his friend if he cares so much about him.ย
Nandor takes Patonโs words personally. He cannot get over the betrayal by Guillermo. So, he impulsively throws Paton Oswalt down the roof. But right after, he realises that Paton was right โ he should not kill Guillermo. On the other hand, the Guide shows up at Guillermoโs motel room and brings the mutant creatures that Laszlo brought to life through his experiment. While saying farewell to them, he gets a call from Nandor, who reveals he is at his home. Guillermo panics and rushes to save his family of vampire killers. Once he shows up there, Nandor reveals that he has decided not to kill Guillermo. He manages to settle the matter with his former familiar and decides to return to the vampire residence.ย
