Actress Zendaya is indeed the future of Hollywood cinema, as the actress is unstoppable now. After giving an incredible performance in Denis Villeneuve’s epic sci-fi sequel film “Dune: Part Two” as Chani, the actress is all set to once again stun the audience with her performance in her upcoming film “Challengers.” In a surprising turn, her latest film, “Challengers,” premiered last month in Sydney, Australia, on March 26, 2024, and has outclassed “Dune: Part Two” to become the best-performing Zendaya movie on Rotten Tomatoes.

Rotten Tomatoes has calculated an official critical score for the movie ahead of the “Challengers” release date, which is scheduled to be April 26, 2024. However, since the movie hasn’t marked its official release yet, the score calculated as of now may fluctuate in the future as more reviews are added. With 72 critics weighing in, the movie has earned a Fresh score of 96% at the time of writing.

It’s the highest score Zendaya’s films have scored to date. Challengers” has even surpassed her previous record of 93%, a score earned by both her recent hit “Dune: Part Two” and 2021’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home.

What is Challengers all about?

Zendaya’s upcoming film “Challengers” is an American romantic sports film directed by Luca Guadagnino. Guadagnino is an acclaimed filmmaker whose films are characterized by their emotional complexity, sensuality, and sumptuous visuals. His most notable works include his “Desire” trilogy, which consists of the films “I Am Love” (2009), “A Bigger Splash” (2015), and “Call Me by Your Name” (2017). The latter brought him international recognition.

As of “Challengers,” the upcoming movie is penned by Justin Kuritzkes and features Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist alongside Zendaya. The film’s plot follows a professional tennis champion who plots a comeback with the help of his wife, a famed tennis prodigy who retired after injuring her knee in a match. The final match pits him against another up-and-coming player, who also happens to be his wife’s former lover.

The film received widespread acclaim from critics. Robbie Collin of The Telegraph awarded the film five stars out of five, writing that the “romantic thriller is the most purely pleasurable film of the year.

The film was previously set to be released on September 15, 2023, and before that, August 11, 2023. The film was also scheduled to have its world premiere as the opening film of the 80th Venice International Film Festival but was delayed and pulled out from the festival by Amazon MGM Studios due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike at the time. Nevertheless, the film has finally settled on one specific release date and will arrive at the theaters on April 26, 2024.
