The renowned name of the entertainment industry, Ellen DeGeneres marks another year of her life today on January 25, 2024. The popular television host has her name attached to various professions including comedian, television host, actress, and writer. Throughout her career, DeGeneres has been the epitome of resilience, dedication, and hard work.

DeGeneres started her stand-up career in the 1980s. As a part of her profession, she has performed in various genres like observational comedy, surreal humour, anti-humor, deadpan, clean comedy, and satire.  When it comes to comedy, Woody Allen and Steve Martin are the ones whom she looks up to.

Her career as a comedian indeed has been illustrious. Starting from her 1986 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson to going on almost a two-decade-long hiatus just to make a return in the 2018 Netflix stand-up special, Relatable.

Apart from being a wonderful comedian, she is also a great actor and has appeared in several films and television series. She has starred in films including Mr. Wrong (1996), EDtv (1999), and The Love Letter (1999). DeGeneres also has a history with Disney as she voiced the beloved Disney character Dory in Finding Nemo (2003) and Finding Dory (2016).

Her television career includes sitcoms like Ellen from 1994 to 1998 and The Ellen Show from 2001 to 2002.

In case I missed out on mentioning, apart from having a diverse career in the entertainment industry, DeGeneres is also an entrepreneur, owning a lifestyle brand that comprises apparel, accessories, home, baby, and pet items. She has authored four books and she also owns a record and producing company.

Her list of ventures is seemingly endless as she has touched almost every sector. The multifaceted figure is also known for her advocacy and philanthropic endeavours.

For the unversed, DeGeneres is widely recognized for her openness about her sexual orientation. In 1997, DeGeneres came out as a lesbian which became a significant moment in media history as it sparked conversations about LGBTQ+ representation and acceptance.

The saying ‘Jack of all trades, master of none’ certainly doesn’t apply to DeGeneres as in every field she has worked in, she has excelled. And her talent has never gone unnoticed. She has been the recipient of numerous accolades including the Primetime Emmy Award,  Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, 20 People’s Choice Awards, and 33 Daytime Emmy Awards.
