Renowned Japanese auteur Kurosawa Kiyoshi’s upcoming film Le Chemin du Serpent, translated as Serpent’s Path, has recently released new images, igniting anticipation among the audience. The upcoming film is a French-language adaptation of Kiyoshi’s 1998 horror thriller film The Serpent’s Path. The film follows a mysterious woman who team up with a man whose daughter was killed and who is now seeking revenge. Together, they kidnap members of an organization and torture them to find out what really happened.

The film features an ensemble cast, including Damien Bonnard (Asteroid City, Les Miserables) and Shibasaki Ko (47 Ronin, Battle Royale) in the leading roles. It will have a female lead. The financier of the film Tax Shelter’s synopsis suggests familiar details: a father’s (Bonnard) quest for revenge aided by a psychiatrist (Shibasaki). The images shared by Tax Shelter feature Mathieu Amalric (previously of Kurosawa’s Daguerrotype) and Claire Denis, regular Grégoire Colin, while further examination has revealed the involvement of Michaël Vander-Meiren.

Kiyoshi is known for directing films like Cure, Pulse, Bright Future, Tokyo Sonata, Journey to the Shore, and Before We Vanish. These films premiered at Cannes, and now Kiyoshi is preparing to complete the new film in time for a summer 2024 release.

Kiyoshi is primarily known for directing films in the horror and psychological thriller genres. His works often explore themes of alienation, isolation, and existential crisis. His unique directorial style sets him apart from any other filmmaker. Kurosawa’s innovative storytelling techniques evoke a sense of unease and dread in his audiences. With his signature dark, visceral aesthetic, filmmaker Kiyoshi Kurosawa has helped build the reputation of Japan’s already acclaimed horror genre.

He started his filmmaking career in the 1980s with low-budget films that never gained widespread release. It wasn’t until 1997’s full-length feature “Cure” that he garnered the international critical acclaim that helped propel his career. After the success of “Cure,” Kurosawa had the opportunity to take artistic chances and became one of the most celebrated filmmakers in the film industry.

A detailed description of the Serpent’s Path is given below:

“An intense desire for revenge fills Albert Bacheret: his daughter Marie. This father, exalted by violence, joins forces with Sayoko to find and kill the culprits one by one. But at the same time, Sayoko leads her own mission of revenge, which risks turning against Albert at any moment… Sayoko Mijima, a Japanese therapist based in Paris, helps Albert Bacheret find the murderer of his eight-year-old daughter, who was killed by members of the Circle, a mysterious association involved in the trafficking of children’s organs. Together, they kidnap several suspects in turn and lock them in a warehouse to extract information from them. Between the quest for truth and the thirst for revenge, the duo will soon find themselves locked in a vicious spiral.”

Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s upcoming Serpent’s Path is scheduled to release on June 14, 2024.
