After scrapping David Lynch’s animated feature Snootworld, the streaming giant Netflix has also canceled the auteur’s next project titled Unrecorded Night. There were several rumors regarding this project that suggested that it might be associated with Twin Peaks. It is a mystery serial drama television series that blurs the line between television and cinema. However, Sabrina Sutherland, Lynch’s producer, clarified that it wasn’t related to Twin Peaks but mentioned that Lynch was close to filming before the pandemic halted production. It was also noted that Unrecorded Night was in its pre-production when, to fans’ dismay, Netflix decided to cancel it.

Why did Netflix Cancel David Lynch’s Project?

In 2019, David Lynch started working on a mysterious new project titled “Wisteria/Unrecorded Night.” Following that, a rumor surfaced that the filmmaker was teaming up with Netflix for this project. Lynch’s frequent collaborators, Naomi Watts and Laura Dern were also spotted attending a meeting at Netflix headquarters with Lynch.

Moreover, as per a casting note from “The Girlfriend Experience,” “The lead of the new David Lynch film requires tasteful nudity. Actress with dark hair in their mid to late 20s.

In February, a poster on Reddit gave additional details about Lynch’s upcoming project, which was said to shoot in late spring, before the pandemic hit, under the working title of  Wisteria.” The mini-series may or may not have been a set of hour-long movies, it was never confirmed. A Production Weekly listing later noted that production was due to begin in May 2021.

Lynch, who is known for maintaining secrecy regarding his projects before their release, opened up about this and shared on his YouTube channel that he was going to shoot a “new movie.” But since then, no update has been given.

In a recent AMA, Sutherland finally explained what happened. She said, “Unrecorded Night was a non-Twin Peaks series that was going to be shot at Netflix but was canceled when the pandemic hit. There’s always a chance we can pick it up again, but David has been enjoying his artwork and music endeavors, so we haven’t gone back to it yet.

Her further revelation about the project made it even more frustrating for the fans, as she stated that shortly before the pandemic, Lynch was “in Pre-production and close to shooting.”

Nevertheless, Sutherland reaffirmed that she is hopeful that “Unrecorded Night” will be resurrected one day along with “Snootworld.”

Well, if not these projects, Lynch has other ideas as well. Talking candidly about Twin Peak’s forthcoming season, Sutherland shared, “I know that David has more ideas for another season, but I don’t know about Mark [Frost].

Twin Peak’s episodes can be streamed on  Paramount+.
