“Founders Day” is an unapologetic slasher by Erik Bloomquist. There’s ample blood and gore. However, it persistently keeps the bloodbath that has been drummed up to keep us distracted from the bundle of contrivances and spectacularly unpersuasive screenplay by Erik Bloomquist and Carson Bloomquist. Ultimately and inevitably, the film becomes so rapidly silly and demented in its sudden spurts of violence and vendetta-whetting that it is near-impossible to look away from the bewildering high display of implausibility. However, it is particularly insistent on hammering a serious political angle, whose significance grows and grows but rarely makes sense.

The exercise of rationalizing the film’s narrative might be facile as it becomes abundantly clear how incoherent it can be. It specializes in the grotesquely exaggerated characterization and randomly sprung events stitched unconvincingly into the fabric of revenge and power play. The problem is none of it is even remotely engaging or as snarky as it’d like to be. There’s a degree of bitchiness or meanness hiding in plain view that bursts only volcanically in the climax, but it is orchestrated with such flat theatrics believability is tough. Credulity is stretched, nevertheless, but whether it is meant to be, there could be the bigger question.

Even so, why does the film feel so sloppy and carelessly strung together, scenes flung around at rude, sporadic whims freely puncturing any sound understanding of character or logical plot developments? Surely, we cannot take away the blame because the film does not pretend to be perfectly feasible. Soon, issues emerge with such urgency that it gets bothersome just how patently ridiculous almost everything in the film is. Events spiral with bizarre thrusts and twists that litter the narrative and border on afterthoughts instead of genuine shockers.

Founders Day (2024) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:

Therefore, it is a strange, jarring mash-up between suspension of disbelief and emotionally driven epiphanies that drives the bulk of the film. “Founders Day” is set in an American town called Fairwood. The setting is so offensively nondescript that, though it primes the viewer through every aspect of its administration and populace, barely anything seems fleshed out. There’s a lot of histrionics and sassy but utterly insipid stereotypes in the form of a female cop whose identifier is her constant need to suck on a lollipop. One of her only awfully memorable bits includes her offering a healthy stack of candies to a distraught father-daughter duo. She insists they take a few, informing them she gets special supplies. This is only one of the endless examples of the film’s utter, pointless inanity.

The film is packed with lots of fast-paced action. There are often too many new developments and turns in the story than one can comprehend with due ease. Possibly, the swiftness with which it hurls supposedly big twists could be to keep us from digging too much into the reasoning of the things happening. We cannot pause to breathe and ponder before the film throws us into the next set of situations.

A still from Founders Day (2024)

In this sleepy town, hormonally raging teens are mostly primed as the characters we follow. It is the polling season. Mayor Gladwell (Amy Hargreaves) is running for re-election. Her rival is Harold Faulkner (Jayce Bartok). They are locked in bitter competition. Both are terribly unpleasant in their own ways. Gladwell’s putting up a fake act of concern for the town is almost as blatant as Harold’s refusal to act agreeably and curry in favor. Neither cares much or gives a damn about the implications of their deeds and words as long as they don’t have to budge from their position. The strain on politics becomes increasingly heavier as the narrative progresses.

Largely revolving around Allison Chambers, the film opens when her lover, Melissa, pleads with her not to break off the relationship and stay since Allison is going away for further studies. Suddenly, a car pulls up on the bridge, and a masked person attacks Melissa, killing her. Scared and horrified at Melissa being killed, Allison scampers away for help. Melissa’s brother, Adam, is lost in grief. He had been in a relationship with Lily, Gladwell’s daughter, but it froze over when Lily started hooking up with someone else. Yet, Lily is still very interested in Adam. Being children of opposing candidates, their relationship isn’t encouraged within their families.

Adam seeks refuge in Allison. Meanwhile, Lily is attacked at the theatre where she works by the masked killer. She doesn’t survive. Adam never told Lily he knew about her hookup, which Melissa had informed him. At school, the bullying pair of Britt and Tyler, who were serving detention, get attacked by the killer. Allison, who was wandering about, stumbles across Adam. He is in the killer’s costume and on the murder spot, writing lyrical notes on the board. Adam tries to attack her, but Allison is rescued by her father, who is waiting outside. In the scuffle, Adam gets killed by her father. He doesn’t get any legal charge pressed on him on account of an act of self-defense. It becomes clear he couldn’t have been the only killer.

Another twist arrives when Allison discovers Melissa is still alive. She finds her father tied up at her home and Melissa and her teacher, Mr Jackson, in cahoots behind the entire massacre. The siblings are frustrated at not being taken seriously by their parents and start to assert themselves. There’s a lot of convoluted backstory, mostly highlighting how mentally unwell Melissa has been.

Founders Day (2024) Movie Ending Explained:

Who became the mayor?

It turns out Mr. Jackson orchestrated the entire plan. He wanted to be mayor but couldn’t kill off the two candidates, so he engineered his plan by influencing the children. He utilizes their hurt and resentment, successfully manipulating them while remaining in control over the grand, elaborate scheme of gaining power. Jackson assures Allison he’d not kill her, insisting he’d be a better mayor. He vows to protect the best interests of the townspeople.

Allison realizes she doesn’t have much of a choice and refrains from ratting him out. Jackon, a council member, succeeds in being the mayor. He turns out just like the candidates he’d killed, making flowery promises and coasting on charisma. Allison also ascends to a powerful position as president of a student government association, but her anxieties don’t leave her.
