My Spy 2: The Eternal City (2024) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:
What is the latest in Sophie’s and JJ’s life?
The film kicks off by showing us that Sophie isn’t the little girl we all fell in love with anymore. She’s grown up and is now a full-fledged agent working for the world’s greatest intelligence agency, the CIA. In an electrifying opening, we watch her wingsuit onto a moving plane to save JJ and Ryan Kerr. But when they disagree with her plan, she unbuckles them from the parachute without hesitation. Later, it is revealed that this adrenaline-pumping opening is just a dream Sophie often has.
JJ has been prepping Sophie not for the CIA but to make her defend herself if the need arises. He’s got her training at a martial arts dojo and even doing underwater drills, teaching her to swim like a fish and hold her breath longer. As for JJ, he’s still with the CIA. However, now he’s sporting a desk job as an analyst, becoming an expert in all sorts of intel. Surprisingly, he’s starting to enjoy this more laid-back gig. Little does JJ know that the upcoming weeks are about to throw him back into the field, whether he’s ready or not.
What are Suitcakes Nukes?
During a CIA operation, Agent Cristina discovers a drive that reveals intel about suitcase nukes. At the end of the Cold War, as the Soviet Union crumbled, the KGB scattered these deadly weapons around the globe so that when the time came, they could be prepped for a potential first strike. Dubbed “suitcases,” these nukes weigh less than 50 pounds, making them easily portable. Yet each packs a punch of 1 kiloton—enough to obliterate an entire city. Back in 1973, NATO intelligence intercepted a top-secret Soviet document containing the activation codes for these suitcase nukes.
If these weapons fall into the wrong hands, the devastation would be unimaginable. Given the gravity of the situation, the director, David Kim, personally asks JJ to return to the field, locate the suitcase nukes, and neutralize the threat. JJ is hesitant and initially refuses, citing countless dangers he can’t even begin to name. “I want to see Sophie walk down the aisle,” he insists. However, everything changes when Christina is gunned down by an unknown Russian operative.
What happens on the field trip to Itlay?
JJ decides to join his daughter Sophie on a field trip to Italy, hoping for some quality bonding time. However, Sophie is quick to tell JJ that she needs her space and doesn’t want him hovering around all the time. She has a huge crush on Ryan and plans to ask him to go to the homecoming dance while they’re in one of the world’s most beautiful cities. Things take a turn when Collin, Kim’s son, is kidnapped. JJ identifies the kidnapper as one Bishop Crane, who used to be part of his special unit. After a fallout, Bishop went rogue and became a mercenary for the rich and powerful.
So why did the kidnappers kidnap Collin? In case you missed it, Collin is the son of David Kim, the CIA’s director of covert operations. Surprisingly, Collin has no clue about his dad’s real job and still thinks he’s a hospital nurse. The kidnappers aim to leverage this so they can force David to access the NATO vault and extract the activation codes for the suitcase nukes. It is not an easy task, given that NATO’s building is one of the most secure places on the planet. The group manages to download the codes. But their plan hits a dead end. During the drop-off on the outskirts of the city, they end up getting captured.
Who is Bishop Crane working for?
Bishop Crane is actually working for Nancy, who has been posing as Sophie’s teacher all along. She designed this fake persona and infiltrated JJ’s world months ago. It turns out she was also the anonymous source that tipped the CIA off about the weapons cache. Nancy manipulated the CIA into using their own agents to uncover the locations of the nukes and had Christina eliminated before she could report back to base. She masterminded the entire operation, including getting David’s son, Collin, to Europe so her men could kidnap him and force David to comply.
Nancy promises to release Collin once she gets the codes but secretly orders Crane to eliminate him. She also poisons JJ with a neurotoxin that will shut down his system within minutes. Luckily, Bobbi and Sophie manage to save JJ just in time, preventing him from dying of asphyxiation. Not long after, JJ tracks the kidnappers to a remote villa and rescues Collin.
My Spy 2: The Eternal City (2024) Movie Ending Explained:
What is the reason for Nancy’s Vendetta?
With the activation codes in her hands, Nancy’s next step is to track down the nukes. She locates them hidden behind a false wall in a remote church. Nancy is not working alone. She’s in cahoots with a group of powerful and wealthy people whose assets were frozen by the American government. Among them was her husband, who was driven to suicide by financial ruin. Nancy’s plan to detonate a nuke in the Vatican and frame an American agent is all part of her personal vendetta.
Nancy contacts the CIA with an ultimatum to meet her demands, or she’ll reveal the location of hundreds of suitcase nukes hidden worldwide. She’s also demanding $50 billion from each of the G-7 nations, or she’ll detonate a nuke in the Vatican. The blast would wipe out thousands, including the G-7 leaders who just so happen to be in the Vatican for a summit. Nancy claims that if she gets a total of $350 billion, she’ll spare everyone. But we all know she’s just bluffing.
JJ and Bobbi track Nancy to an underground storage vault where she’s set to launch her plan. JJ takes out all the guards. But Crane manages to escape with the kill switch, the only thing that can prevent the detonation. Bobbi is left helpless, as she does not know how to deactivate it. A chase erupts through the streets of the Vatican, but JJ and Sophie manage to deactivate the nukes with seconds left on the timer. Nancy also gets arrested and hauled into custody by David Kim as she tries to flee the city.
As the film nears its end, Sophie apologizes to JJ for giving him a hard time and suggests he get back into the field as an agent. She also comes to terms with her feelings and realizes that it’s not Ryan she’s in love with but her best friend, Collin. Meanwhile, David Kim and Bobbi begin to date as well.
