Lady in the Lake Episode 3: “I was the first to see her dead. You were the last to see her alive.” Recap:

“Lady in the Lake” episode 3 begins with a scene from Cleo’s (Moses Ingram) childhood in 1948. As a child, she noticed her father, Alvin, return home after he sold his trumpet to Shell Gordon (Wood Harris) to make ends meet. Cleo’s mother, Merva, was upset because that was how he made his living. She worried that he was getting unduly involved in the affairs of Mr. Gordon’s business, gambling, and wasn’t thinking clearly. Cleo overheard their argument from her bedroom. Then, she walked into the bathroom and found Alvin sitting by himself. She cheered him up by singing a song while he pretended to play his trumpet. Then, she saw blood dripping from his nose.

Besides this endearing moment, we get a glimpse into the strange visions Cleo used to have as a child. On a rainy, windy night, she saw a lamb at a distance while she was playing hopscotch. Then, she got covered in white cloth and looked like a ghost. From this surreal vision, the narrative shifts to her present, where she walks to her department store job as a human mannequin. The radio news reports an assassination attempt on Myrtle Summers’ (Angela Robinson) life. Earlier, Cleo was the person who drove the assassins to her house. So, she is still in the shock of witnessing it. She calls Reggie (Josiah Cross), who sent her there and confronts him. But he feigns ignorance.

Maddie’s Job Prospects

While Cleo remains panicked after Myrtle’s assassination attempt, Maddie (Natalie Portman) returns to the store where Cleo works to get her ears pierced. The saleswoman asks whether it is frowned upon in their faith. Even though it is, Maddie decides to do it, and Judith (Mikey Madison) supports her decision. Afterward, she shows up at the office of The Baltimore Star newspaper for a job. There, she asks Bob Bauer (Pruitt Taylor Vince) to give her a job since she helped him with the news about Stephen Zawadzkie (Dylan Arnold) from the fish store, who was arrested for his connection to Tessie Durst’s (Bianca Belle) disappearance.

Maddie offers to work on the investigation and to speak with Stephen’s mother, who presumably spotted a black man with a bruised eye (Reggie) chasing Tessie. Bob denigrates Maddie for her lack of journalistic experience and refuses to do a favor and offer her a job. While Myrtle walks out of the hospital recovering from her assassination attempt, Maddie writes a letter to contact Stephen in the psychiatric hospital. Then, she asks her neighbor, Cedrick (Selema Masekela), if he can take messages for her on his telephone. He agrees to do so. Meanwhile, Cleo sees a dream with motifs of ghosts and lambs. But this time, she sees Tessie with them.
