Fans eagerly awaiting the release of Ballerina, the John Wick spin-off, may have been concerned by the news of reshoots. However, star Ana de Armas is here to put those worries to rest. During a conversation with Collider’s Perri Nemiroff at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), where Ana de Armas was promoting her latest historical drama Eden, the actress revealed her excitement for the upcoming action-packed thriller – Ballerina.
Initial Concerns About Reshoots
De Armas, who stars as Rooney, a ballerina turned assassin seeking revenge for her family’s murder, was initially taken aback by the reshoots. “Every time they say you have reshoots, it’s not good. You don’t feel good about it,” she admitted. But as she delved further into the process, her confidence grew, largely due to the involvement of John Wick producer and action mastermind Chad Stahelski. “Oh my gosh, I love Chad,” de Armas said, highlighting his creative touch. She praised the additional footage from the reshoots, explaining that “all we did in those reshoots had to be there. We got amazing footage. It’s really spectacular.”
A Dangerous and Sexy John Wick Spin-Off
It seems that the added scenes have only improved what is already shaping up to be an electrifying film. “It’s dangerous, it’s sexy, it’s very John Wick,” de Armas continued, offering fans a glimpse into what they can expect. “People are going to be surprised. I’m biased, of course, I like the movie, but I think it’s really cool. It’s going to be amazing.” She also teased that a trailer is on the horizon and hinted at how proud she is of the project.
Familiar Faces Return, New Stars Join
Ballerina picks up between the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and Chapter 4, diving deep into the world of high-stakes assassins. Fans of the franchise will be delighted to see familiar faces, including Keanu Reeves as John Wick, Anjelica Huston as the Director, Ian McShane as Winston Scott, and the late Lance Reddick, who will be making his final appearance as Charon. The film also brings in new cast members, including Gabriel Byrne, Norman Reedus, and Sharon Duncan-Brewster, adding fresh faces to the high-octane ensemble. Directed by action aficionado Len Wiseman (Underworld, Live Free or Die Hard) and written by Shay Hatten (Army of the Dead), Ballerina promises to deliver the kind of thrilling action John Wick fans love.
A Tough Transition From Eden to Ballerina
Though thrilled with the film, de Armas noted that jumping back into the world of intense action was a challenge after finishing her work on Eden, a much different project. Eden, directed by Ron Howard, is a survival thriller about European settlers attempting to create a paradise on a deserted island, only to find it overrun by snakes. “It was a hard switch, but it was great,” de Armas said, describing how she had to transition from fight training for Ballerina while still mentally engaged with her role in Eden. “I was finishing Eden, and we started the reshoots like two weeks later, so that was a big switch mentally and physically to get back to that.“
What Fans Can Expect
Despite the challenges, de Armas’s passion for both projects shines through. Fans won’t have to wait much longer to see her in action as Ballerina pirouettes into theaters on June 6, 2025. Until then, audiences can catch her in Eden, which is set to be an emotional and intense counterpoint to the action-heavy Ballerina.
With de Armas at the helm of the John Wick spin-off, supported by Stahelski’s signature choreography, Ballerina is shaping up to be an action-packed spectacle that will add depth to the John Wick universe. As de Armas confidently said, “It’s going to be amazing.”
