“Another Simple Favor” (2025) is a particularly twisted affair, and even the most devoted fans of the Emily-Stephanie saga would agree that it unfolds like a telenovela script. That’s a part of its appeal. It is campy and finds a wicked sense of fun in the same campiness. It shows Emily and Stephanie’s journey after what happened in “A Simple Favor.” Their friendship devolved from a casual infatuation to a full-blown meltdown that put Emily under a 20-year sentence. At the same time, Stephanie and her vlog became far more popular because of Emily’s disappearance. Stephanie got a chance to live as Emily while realizing Emily’s entire life was a ruse.

In the first movie, Emily is revealed to be Hope, who left her home with her twin sister Faith. Together, they burned down their house to kill their abusive father. Years later, Emily / Hope gets arrested for her connection to Faith’s death, among other crimes. Stephanie makes that arrest happen. So, the sequel plays out like an elaborate ploy for revenge. However, the movie keeps asking us the opposite. Is Emily really seeking revenge against Stephanie? The ending reveals a facet of truth.

Another Simple Favor (2025) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:

“Another Simple Favor” is the second chapter of the Emily-Stephanie saga that began with 2018’s “A Simple Favor.” Paul Feig returns as a director with a script written by Jessica Sharzer and Laeta Kalogridis.

What happens in ‘Another Simple Favor’?

“Another Simple Favor” picks up a while after the events from “A Simple Favor.” This time, Emily Nelson (Blake Lively) is in prison, and Stephanie Smothers (Anna Kendrick) is profiting off what happened between them. Her vlog has grown even more popular among moms and more, leading her to write a book about her experience with Emily. However, while in a reading event for the book, Stephanie gets a surprise. Emily is out of prison, at least for the time being, and plans to get married in Capri with Dante Versano (Michele Morrone). He is an Italian man whom she met many years ago.

Emily invites Stephanie to her wedding as her maid of honor. Stephanie finds it strange, considering all that happened to them. She assumes that this is Stephanie’s plan to seek revenge and kill her. However, she can’t reject that invitation, or else Stephanie might file a case against her for using her likeness and identity for her book. So, Stephanie reluctantly travels to Capri. While there, she meets Emily’s ex-husband Sean Townsend (Henry Golding)—the same man she slept with after Emily notoriously went missing. He also reluctantly attends the wedding since Emily forced him to join with their son, Nicky (Ian Ho).

Emily managed to threaten him with Dante’s wealth and influence as a terrifying mafioso in Italy. Stephanie realizes this truth about Dante only after she arrives in Capri. On the first day of the ceremony, Sean gets into a heated argument with Emily about their son and takes out his pent-up anger on her. He threatens to take over Nicky’s full custody. The same night, Sean is found dead in his bathtub. Stephanie believes that someone murdered Sean, but the authorities rule it out as a suicide.

Why is Stephanie under house arrest?

Stephanie isn’t convinced by the cops’ verdict of Sean’s death and believes that Emily is behind it. She feels she’s the next in line to get killed since Emily also holds a grudge against her. While following Emily in the streets of Capri, Stephanie bumps into a woman following her. This woman turns out to be FBI agent Irene Walker (Taylor Ortega), who’s actually following Emily’s Aunt Linda (Allison Janney) for a different crime. Shortly before the wedding, Irene saw Linda in the town of Stephanie’s book-reading ceremony with a woman who looks like Emily.

At Emily’s wedding ceremony, Stephanie gives a fiery speech, claiming Emily isn’t marrying Dante just for love. Soon, she notices Dante getting shot to death, but cannot see the shooter. Dante’s mother, Portia (Elena Sofia Ricci), accuses Emily of killing her son for his money. However, the blame eventually falls on Stephanie, who is put under house arrest in a luxurious hotel room.

Another Simple Favor (2025) Movie Ending Explained:

Does Stephanie ever get out of Capri?

Emily visits Stephanie in dark clothes to present her grief. She accuses Stephanie of continuing to use her pain to gain more love and followers. Stephanie feels that this isn’t Emily, but can’t prove her hunch. After all, both of Emily / Hope’s sisters, Faith and Charity, are dead. Anyhow, this woman, who pretends to be Emily, uses a knife to stab herself and blames Stephanie for this supposed attack. Shortly after, Stephanie finds a way to sneak out of her room in hopes of meeting Irene, who can help her resolve the accusations of killing Dante and escape Capri. However, when they meet, the Emily impersonator injects something into both of them.

Stephanie finds herself kidnapped in the middle of nowhere. Soon, Emily shows up there to rescue her. She proves that she is Emily / Hope while discussing the truth about Charity. As it turns out, Aunt Linda, who helped Emily’s mother with her and Faith’s labor, claimed that Charity was dead upon birth. However, that wasn’t the case. Linda took Charity under her wing and provided her with a different home than her abusive father’s. Back in the present, Emily rescues Stephanie, who returns to her life as a popular true-crime author with a new book about her recent experience with Emily. Before that, she realizes the truth about Sean’s death and Emily’s invitation.

Why does Sean get killed?

Charity shows up in Emily / Hope’s life shortly before her wedding. She says that she is romantically interested in Hope, which complicates Emily’s life further. Regardless, this is why Charity kills Sean, since he takes away a part of Hope’s joy. On the other hand, Charity wants to kill Stephanie, thinking she is keeping her away from Hope. However, unbeknownst to Charity, Linda also wants to kill Hope. The climax shows them all coming face to face when Charity kills Linda. Then, she goes to the prison as Emily while Hope / Emily leads a free life.

Why did Emily invite Stephanie to Capri in the first place?

Emily and Dante’s marriage was a sham. She was marrying him to help him be with the love of his life, Matteo (Lorenzo de Moor). That was otherwise impossible since Dante and Matteo’s criminal families have been rivals for several years. Emily decided to help them stay together while profiting from this deal. That’s why she invited Stephanie to be her savior against the forces that might take her life in Capri, knowing Stephanie’s sharp eye for solving crimes.
