Meanwhile, British intelligence and Riverhouse were in disarray, and Jonathan was no longer operating from the shadows.
Episode 5 pushes each character into a corner where survival means making impossible decisions. Back in England, agents are hunted by Mayra, who has been ordered by Roper to expose anyone connected to Jonathan. In Colombia, tensions rise between Roper and Teddy as secrets come to light. Jonathan tries to regroup and find the next move, but the revelation of his identity changes every calculation.

The Night Manager (Season 2) Episode 5 Recap:
Episode 5 opens with the fallout from Jonathan Pine’s exposed identity. Roper is no longer guessing who “Matthew Ellis” really is. He confirms to Mayra that Jonathan is alive and behind the mission in the UK, and he orders her to find everyone connected to him. Realizing the net is tightening, Basil moves immediately. He tries to leave the UK, telling Sally the mission is over and that she needs to disappear. He knows Mayra’s men are already watching him, and the situation has become too dangerous for the Night Owl Unit to operate as before. Basil also leaves incriminating and important files for Angela Burr, hoping that at least some evidence will survive if he cannot. But before he can make good his escape, he is picked up by Mayra’s operatives. He is now in her hands and has far more to answer for than just Jonathan’s location.
Meanwhile, in Colombia, Roper questions Teddy about his loyalty. Teddy insists that everything is on track — the prosecutor has been eliminated, and the weapons shipment can move forward. But Roper knows it is never that simple now that Jonathan is back. The tension between father and son remains palpable.
Back in the UK, Jonathan has a fragile moment of calm with Roxana. They have fled to her family’s old abandoned home, a place left behind after her father’s death. Jonathan explains to her that he does not actually have a backup team, that MI6 is deeply compromised, and that there is no immunity waiting for her. Roxana does not react well. She feels betrayed, especially when Jonathan admits that her previous lies led indirectly to the death of his friend in Spain.
What motive does Roxana have?
Despite Jonathan’s warning to Roxana not to act rashly, she ultimately decides to take her own risk. She leaves their shelter and walks back into Roper’s world of danger. Her motives are unclear — whether she has chosen to betray Jonathan to save herself or is playing a long game to gather evidence against Roper remains uncertain. But her move sends a clear message: she is no longer hiding.

Jonathan also arranges a face-to-face meeting with Roper at a restaurant. Both men use false identities, but the tension between them is unmistakable. Pine attempts to force Roper’s hand, demanding that he surrender and expose his entire network. Roper offers Pine a bribe instead: $50 million to walk away and forget the mission. Jonathan rejects the offer and gives Roper an ultimatum, even while secretly recording the meeting. Although both know each other too well, neither man is willing to give in.
In England, Basil’s situation deteriorates fast. Mayra interrogates him at a safehouse, seeking answers about Jonathan and Riverhouse’s past actions. Basil refuses to betray Jonathan or reveal any further mission details. Though beaten and bloodied, he continues to protect the operation’s secrets. Eventually, Mayra orders her men to kill him, showing just how far the threat has spread and how ruthless Roper’s allies have become.
Back at the compound, Teddy is more curious than defiant. He searches Roper’s desk and finds documents and a passport that confirm what Jonathan had told him. He also finds photographs of Danny, Roper’s other son in the UK. Teddy then sends Pine details about the weapons flight and photos of the aircraft that will carry it. With that act, Teddy has — without openly saying so — chosen a side.
The Night Manager (Season 2) Episode 5 Ending Explained:
Does Roxana betray Jonathan?
Episode 5’s final moments are dominated by Roxana’s decision. She turns herself over to Roper and Juan. Roper immediately puts her on the defensive, threatening to kill her if he believes she will double-cross him. When Roper says he wants “Jonathan Pine,” Roxana replies calmly, “Well, now I know his name.” This line hangs in the air, signaling exactly how dangerous things have become. Roxana’s choice could be betrayal. Or she could be going in deep to gather more evidence. The show leaves this ambiguous, heightening the tension before the finale.
Jonathan, now fully exposed, must also reckon with the fact that his once carefully hidden identity is now public knowledge. Roper will not rest, and Mayra’s orders have already spread through the network. The lives of everyone around Jonathan are compromised. Basil is dead. Sally is on the run. Angela and others are vulnerable. Teddy may have given Jonathan valuable information, but that may have put him at risk as well.
The shared knowledge of Pine’s identity and the threat against him multiplies the danger — not just for Pine, but for every ally he has. The recording at the restaurant, Mayra’s cruelty, Teddy’s reluctant allegiance, and Roxana’s ambiguous surrender all point toward a finale where the mission will be upended entirely. The episode ends with more questions than answers and sets up a finale in which no outcome seems guaranteed.
