Mormon Wives Star Mikayla Matthews Speaks Out on Separation From Husband Jace Terry

Mikayla Matthews is opening up about her relationship with husband Jace Terry after viewers learned about their separation during the latest season of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives.

The reality series revealed that the couple had decided to take time apart while Matthews continues to work through personal trauma that has affected their marriage. The pair share four children together, including a baby girl born in July.

Speaking about the situation, Matthews says the separation is still very recent and both of them are trying to understand how to move forward.

“It’s still new to me, and it’s new to him, and we’re just navigating it the best way that we can,” Matthews said while discussing the state of their relationship.

Season four of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives explores the challenges Matthews and Terry have faced in their marriage. Matthews explains that intimacy has been difficult as she continues to process trauma connected to sexual abuse she experienced as a child.

She says revisiting those experiences while filming the show was a major step for her.

“Last season, we dove into the beginning stages of it, and that was me revisiting all this trauma for the first time as well,” Matthews said.

Conversations around intimacy remain difficult. Matthews explains that her body often reacts strongly when those topics come up.

“I think it’s hard anytime you bring up the stuff with the sex and the intimacy,” she said. “I feel it’s hard on me because again, my nervous system is already in fight or flight, and I’m already maxed out. My bucket is full.”

Therapy and the Decision to Separate

During the series, Matthews shares that she and Terry have attended therapy together in an effort to address the issues in their marriage. At the same time, she has been dealing with chronic skin flare ups that have made it harder to focus fully on recovery.

The couple eventually decided that spending time apart could help Matthews focus on her healing.

Matthews says the separation is not meant to end their relationship permanently.

“I don’t think it’s like with the intention of being separated forever,” she said. “I think we’re obviously still going to see each other every single day.”

She also emphasized that their children remain the center of their lives.

“I’m not trying to go even a day away from the kids anyway,” Matthews added.

Jace Terry Says He Is Trying to Be Patient

The show also features Terry discussing the situation with friends. While he admits the lack of progress has been difficult, he says he is trying to support Matthews through the process.

“I’m definitely not okay with it,” Terry said during a conversation with friends. “Me throwing fits about it all the time and getting upset doesn’t help anything.”

Instead, he says patience is the only way forward.

“So I just feel like the only thing I can do is be patient and be there for her,” he said.

At one point, Terry suggests that committing more fully to trauma focused therapy could help Matthews work through the stress she experiences when discussing intimacy.

Matthews responds that she has already spent significant time in therapy but still finds the issue deeply challenging.

“I feel like I’ve done a lot of therapy work already, and my stuff is still bad,” she said.

Mikayla Matthews and Jace Terry Still Appear Together

Despite their separation, Matthews and Terry have continued to appear together publicly and on social media.

Earlier this year the couple attended the opening night of castmate Whitney Leavitt’s Broadway debut in Chicago. They later joined the afterparty in New York with their children.

Matthews also included Terry in a lighthearted Valentine’s Day post, joking with fellow cast member Mayci Neeley that their husbands had become “third wheels” during a night out.

For now, Matthews says the focus remains on healing and taking things slowly while the couple figures out what the future looks like.
