Veronica Roth is returning to the world of Divergent with two new novels, fifteen years after the original series first began. The announcement was made on Saturday at BookCon, where the author shared details about the upcoming project.

‘Divergent’ Author Veronica Roth Explores An Alternate Path for Tris’ Story

Roth explained that the new books will form a companion duology set in an “alternate universe.” This means the story is not a prequel, not a sequel, and not a spinoff. It also does not retell the story from a different point of view. Instead, it imagines a different version of events where the main character, Tris (Beatrice Prior), makes a different choice at a key moment.

Speaking to USA Today, Roth said that the new story explores what Tris would be like if she had not chosen Dauntless. She described this idea as interesting because it asks a simple but important question about the character’s identity and how her choices shape her life.

The first book in the new duology is titled The Sixth Faction and is set to be released on October 6. While it can be read as a standalone story, Roth shared that longtime fans of the series will find it especially rewarding. She is excited for readers to see how familiar characters and new developments come together in this alternate version of the story.

Tris’ Life Beyond Dauntless

In the original trilogy, Tris chooses Dauntless, which is known as the faction of bravery. In this new version, things take a different turn. At her Choosing Ceremony, tragedy strikes, and her decision leads her into an underground rebellion. During this journey, she meets Tobias “Four” Eaton, who was also her love interest in the original books. Roth noted that even though Tris makes a different choice, she still finds her way to some of the same people, and seeing how that happens is part of what makes the story engaging.

The original books, Divergent, Insurgent, and Allegiant, follow Tris Prior, a teenage girl living in a post-apocalyptic Chicago where society is divided into five factions. When she learns that she is Divergent, meaning she does not fit into just one group, she must hide her identity as conflict grows around her.

The series was later adapted into films starring Shailene Woodley, including Divergent, The Divergent Series: Insurgent, and The Divergent Series: Allegiant. A planned final film, Ascendant, was never made.

Roth has also expanded the series in the past with Four and We Can Be Mended, both told from Four’s perspective. With this new duology, she is offering readers a fresh way to return to a familiar world while exploring how one different choice can change everything.
