Imperfect Women (2026) is a psychological thriller starring Elisabeth Moss, Kerry Washington, and Kate Mara. Created by Annie Weisman, the eight-episode miniseries is based on Araminta Hall’s 2020 novel of the same name. The show focuses on three women, Eleanor, Nancy, and Mary, and follows the difficult choices they make in their lives. It explores how their relationships change over time and how one major event puts everything they know under pressure. The series feels tonally confused, drags out certain moments, and at times comes across as completely directionless. While it does explore female friendship and the complicated journeys women go through, it only lightly touches on deeper themes. It looks at judgment, pressure, and social expectations placed on women, which often push them to make poor decisions and deal with lasting guilt from those choices.

In this article, I will break down the entire plot line of the series, currently streaming on Apple+. Please note that there are major spoilers throughout the article.

Imperfect Women (2026) Episode 1 ‘Eleanor’ Recap:

What really happened to Nancy that night?

The episode opens with Eleanor being taken into prison. She looks tense as she thinks about her close friendship with Mary and Nancy. Soon after, detectives question her about where she was that night. Eleanor seems confused and says she saw her friends at dinner. It becomes clear she was the last person to speak to Nancy, which makes her important to the investigation. The story then moves back 11 hours before the murder. Eleanor is running her company, Rescue and Relief, when Nancy asks to meet. It is Mary’s birthday, so the three of them go out for drinks. Nancy seems uneasy, especially after receiving a message that clearly disturbs her. Later, when she is alone with Eleanor, Nancy admits she is having an affair behind her husband Robert’s back. Eleanor tells her to end it because it is not making her happy.

In the middle of the night, Robert calls Eleanor, worried because Nancy has not come home. Eleanor quickly texts Nancy, trying to hide the affair. She leaves Jordan’s place, an employee whom she has been seeing, and goes to Robert’s house. There, she finally tells him about the affair and mentions that the man’s name is David. Soon, the police arrive, informing that a body has been found in Arroyo Seco Park. They believe it is Nancy. Eleanor goes to identify the body. In the present, she is released but still under suspicion. She tells Mary and Howard about Nancy’s death. Mary is upset that Eleanor hid the affair.

Cora, Nancy’s daughter, is in shock and hints that Robert has anger issues. Robert has no alibi, which makes him a suspect. At the funeral, Eleanor notices a strange man. Later, news reveals Davide Haji Boyette, an artist connected to Nancy. One of his paintings shows Nancy naked, which angers Robert, and he destroys it. The episode ends with Robert asking Eleanor to join him at the ballet, and she eventually agrees, raising more questions.

Imperfect Women (2026) Episode 2 ‘Crush’ Recap:

What is Eleanor hiding about those missing three hours?

The episode opens with Eleanor and Robert going to the ballet together. There is a quiet tension between them, and it is clear they share a past. Eleanor even seems a little resentful that she was the one who introduced Nancy to him. As they sit side by side, her hand slowly moves closer to his, showing how complicated their feelings are. Their moment is interrupted when Robert receives a picture of Nancy with Davide. It upsets him, and even so, he admits that he still loves Nancy.

After the ballet, Robert drops Eleanor off at home and thanks her for joining him. When she walks inside, she finds Jordan waiting for her. He is upset and starts questioning her about spending time with Robert. During the conversation, he brings up something serious. There are three hours missing from Eleanor’s timeline on the night Nancy died, which makes her story seem suspicious. The next morning, Eleanor goes out for a run and notices a black car parked nearby, watching her. This makes her uneasy. Later, it is revealed that the man in the car works for her brother, Donovan. He has been keeping an eye on Eleanor because he is worried about her connection with Robert.

Eleanor then visits Mary, whose house feels chaotic. She notices police reports about Davide’s arrest, and Mary says something does not feel right. Meanwhile, Robert is struggling and has even forgotten about Cora’s birthday, which makes him feel like he is losing control of his life. Detective Ganz questions Eleanor about Nancy’s connection to Davide and reveals details about Nancy’s difficult past. Later, the police search Robert’s house thoroughly.

Mary continues her own investigation and convinces Eleanor to visit Davide’s gallery. He explains his connection with Nancy through art and mentions that someone else brought her to a party, though he cannot remember much. Back at the house, Robert is overwhelmed. His family hired a firm that leaked Nancy’s photo, leading to Davide’s arrest. In their shared grief, Eleanor and Robert grow closer and end up sleeping together. Later, Eleanor finds a letter Robert wrote to Nancy, where he admits he knew about the affair and apologizes for how he reacted.

The episode picks up from the moment when Eleanor is shocked when Robert walks into the room. She immediately confronts him about the letter she found. Robert admits that he argued with Nancy after discovering her affair through messages to David. He says he lost control and broke things around the house, but insists he never hurt her. Eleanor does not fully believe him and tells him he should not lie. Robert explains that Nancy left to meet David and end things, and he felt helpless for not going after her.

Eleanor decides to leave and tries to distance herself, saying she has work to attend to. Robert keeps messaging her, but she ignores him. At work, Marcus, Mary’s son, reminds her about their agreement to stay quiet about something that happened that night, which adds more mystery. Meanwhile, a journalist follows Eleanor, and Jordan confronts her again about their relationship. She ends things with him and asks him to stay away. Mary, on the other hand, wants to take a journal to the police, believing it contains an important clue, but Eleanor is unsure.

Eleanor feels guilty and goes back to Robert, and they grow close again. Later, Cora catches them together and is clearly upset, though they try to make excuses. Despite this, Eleanor and Robert continue their affair. The next morning, a video of Cora exposing them spreads online, causing trouble at Eleanor’s workplace. Detective Ganz and Donovan both pressure her for answers.

Eleanor finally tells Donovan part of the truth. She explains that she helped Marcus that night and then went to Jordan’s place. However, she hides a key detail. A flashback reveals that Eleanor met Nancy earlier that night. Nancy wanted help ending things with David, but Eleanor refused and argued with her. She left Nancy alone and drove away. In the present, Mary arrives and reveals that she knows who David really is.

Imperfect Women (2026) Episode 4 ‘Nancy’ Recap:

Who is Nancy really having an affair with?

A flashback takes us to Nancy as a teenager. She grew up in a difficult home with an abusive family and a strained relationship with her mother. Even then, she dreams of escaping and building a better life. Years later, she achieves that by marrying into wealth and status. For 18 years, she has carefully built a perfect image, especially through her New Year’s parties, but deep down, she is still not satisfied. The episode goes further back to the early days of her marriage to Robert. At that time, they are deeply in love, and Robert is confident about their future. Nancy feels safe with him, but as the years pass, that love slowly fades into distance and routine.

At one of her New Year’s parties, Nancy meets a bartender named David. Around the same time, Mary arrives with her children, and the two women talk about their struggles. Nancy sees Mary as a strong figure, almost like the mother she never had, though she also feels a bit jealous of her. Nancy becomes consumed with how others see her and starts to neglect her relationship with her daughter, Cora. She feels like she does not truly belong in her life and still sees herself as the same person she once was. Meanwhile, Robert hides his financial problems from her, which adds tension between them.

During the party, Nancy notices Robert having a serious conversation with his parents, but he refuses to explain what is going on. His mother, Kit, later warns Nancy to stay out of family matters and suggests that her life is not as secure as she thinks. Nancy searches for answers and finds emails about a possible divorce on Robert’s laptop. Upset, she confronts Cora after seeing her dressed in a way that reminds Nancy of her past, and the argument ends with Nancy slapping her. Overwhelmed, Nancy leaves the house and has a panic attack, recalling a traumatic incident from her past. Outside, she turns down David, but then shares a quiet moment with Howard. In a strange slip, she calls him David, raising new questions about her affair.

Imperfect Women (2026) Episode 5 ‘Louise’ Recap:

What happened between Nancy and Robert?

The episode goes back to Nancy reflecting on her childhood. She started ballet when she was nine years old, and it quickly became very important to her. She learned discipline through pain, which was something she was already used to from her difficult home life. Even as she grew older, she kept a calm and graceful image on the outside, while struggling deeply on the inside. Two months before her death, things are tense at home. Robert is distant and stressed because of work, often staying late and missing dinner. Nancy feels frustrated because he does not take her work seriously. He is also drinking heavily, which makes things worse. Nancy turns to Mary to talk, but she does not fully listen to her advice and instead spends time with Howard.

At the ballet, Nancy works on a play called Ariadne, while Howard helps with notes. Over time, they grow closer. Nancy also tells Ellie that she is planning an art piece for Robert, which leads her to Davide. At the same time, she blocks Scott, who keeps trying to contact her. Four weeks before her death, Nancy and Howard spend more time together and eventually cross a line. After opening up about her past and her mistakes, Nancy admits she likes the thrill of danger, and they begin an affair.

Nancy later tells Ellie about the affair and tries to confront Robert. He is about to leave for a business trip, and when she asks about divorce, he reassures her before leaving. As soon as he is gone, Nancy calls Howard and continues the affair. Things spiral further when Nancy goes to a party and flirts with other men, even sitting on Davide’s lap. When Robert returns, a family dinner reveals his financial troubles. He had made a risky decision, and now his father controls everything. At home, Robert breaks down and admits he was trying to protect Nancy through a possible divorce plan. They reconcile briefly, but things fall apart again when Robert finds messages on her phone. He becomes angry and destructive, and Nancy drives away while Mary follows.

Imperfect Women (2026) Episode 6 ‘Mary’ Recap:

Is Howard hiding something?

The episode focuses on Mary and her past. Before becoming a mother, she had her own dreams and wanted to be a writer. She often drew from her own life for inspiration, and people around her encouraged her to write about Nancy. Nancy was always seen as perfect, while Mary stayed more laid-back and less concerned about appearances. Mary grew up as the oldest of five children on a pot farm in the 1980s. Even though her life was not easy, she never felt deprived because she used her imagination and found ways to cope. In the present, her life takes a turn when Howard gets a promotion that requires the family to move to Ohio. This creates tension because their children are settled, and Mary wants to focus on her own goals. Howard becomes frustrated, and his behavior changes, which eventually pressures Mary into giving in.

After an argument, Mary hides Adderall in the house. Soon after, she and Howard are questioned about Eleanor and Robert’s affair. During this, it is revealed that Mary was very drunk on the night Nancy died and was taken home in an Uber. Howard claims she was home by 10:30 pm. Later, Mary finds a hidden note in Nancy’s sketchbook with a line from Howard’s poetry. This makes her realize that Howard may have been unfaithful. When she confronts him, he twists the situation and makes her feel guilty. Mary remembers seeing Howard and Nancy arguing at the ballet, which increases her suspicions. Marcus also tells her that Eleanor helped him that night, protecting Eleanor’s role in everything.

Determined to find the truth, Mary searches the house and finds Nancy’s gold ring. This pushes her further into doubt. She then meets Jenny, Howard’s former partner, and learns that Howard treated Mary as unimportant and even questioned their child. Shaken, Mary goes to Eleanor for support, but they are interrupted when they learn that Mary’s child has overdosed on the pills she hid.

Imperfect Women (2026) Episode 7 ‘Fabulation’ Recap:

Is Howard really the killer or is someone else being framed?

The episode opens with Mary breaking down after seeing her daughter in the hospital. Her condition is serious, but she survives. Mary refuses to leave and snaps at a nurse while thinking about her past. She remembers how she once had big dreams, but everything changed when she became pregnant. She believed her life with Howard was her happy ending, even though it clearly is not. The next morning, the police approach Mary for questioning. Ellie promises to help her get a lawyer, but things get worse. Child protective services step in after the overdose, and Mary is forced to leave the hospital. There is also an emergency order that keeps her away from her home during the investigation.

Mary speaks privately with Howard, who almost admits that the pills were his fault. She reacts angrily, but it only makes her situation worse. Ellie steps in and calms her down before things escalate. Mary then meets Detective Ganz and shows her the letter and Nancy’s ring, believing this proves Howard’s guilt. However, Ganz does not believe her. She reveals that Howard already gave Nancy’s belongings to the police and claims Mary had been taking items from Nancy’s house. This damages Mary’s credibility.

Still determined, Mary studies crime scene photos and visits the place where Nancy was killed. She believes investigators missed key details, especially how the body was moved. She later finds Howard’s medical reports and thinks his shoulder injury explains how the crime happened. When she confronts Howard, he turns the situation around and reveals something disturbing. He claims Mary took Nancy’s belongings and used them to dress up like her, acting out scenes as part of her storytelling. Shaken, Mary briefly decides to stay silent for her children. Ellie disagrees and pushes forward, even involving Robert. Soon, Howard is taken in for questioning, but the focus shifts when a new suspect, Scott Reed, is identified.

Imperfect Women (2026) Episode 8 ‘The Bridge’ Recap:

Who is Scott Reed?

The finale episode begins five days before Nancy’s death. She is clearly shaken after receiving explicit pictures of herself from Howard. Feeling desperate, she calls Scott and tells him she needs to see him. In the present, Mary sits in the hospital waiting room when Howard arrives with his lawyer. He takes the children away and blames Mary for everything. Since there is no strong evidence against him, he is released, while the police focus on Scott instead. Even so, Ellie remains convinced that Howard is guilty.

Howard files for custody of the children and pushes for a quick court date, which puts Mary under pressure. With no one else to turn to, she asks Robert for help. While they are talking, the police arrive and confirm that Scott has been arrested, although he has not confessed. Later, Ellie and Mary meet Scott in prison. He insists he did not kill Nancy. He explains that Nancy came to him after being threatened by Howard, who had sent her the photos. She asked Scott for protection. On the night she died, Scott says he heard Howard and Nancy arguing, and when he arrived, Nancy was already dead.

Imperfect Women (2026) Ending Explained:

Who killed Nancy?

Ellie and Mary try to share this with the police, but they refuse to change their focus. At the custody hearing, Ellie supports Mary but accidentally reveals damaging information about her past, which leads to the children being taken by social services. The ending of Imperfect Women (2026) shows that night, Howard attacks Mary under the bridge where Nancy died. He threatens her, but Mary manages to call Ellie. Ellie rushes to the location after hearing the word “dead zone.” There, Howard admits he killed Nancy. A struggle follows. Ellie hits him with her car, and Mary finally kills him in self-defence.

In the final moments of the finale of Imperfect Women (2026), the episode hints that the characters are trying to move on, even after everything they have been through. Eleanor seems ready to start fresh with Jordan, the colleague she grew close to earlier in the series. At the same time, Mary keeps custody of her children and looks hopeful as her family, along with Robert’s, come together for her daughter’s birthday party. In the end, Imperfect Women resolves the main mystery, but Eleanor and Mary are left to deal with the emotional fallout, suggesting that life must move on even though the experience has completely changed these two women.
