This year’s The Bride! Directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal is a Gothic romance fantasy that flits between genres, putting the classic monster tropes in 1930s crime-ridden Chicago.
The Bride! Is inspired by 1935’s classic The Bride of Frankenstein. However, it moves the setting to 1930s Chicago, introducing elements of a crime drama. This plot is created through Frankenstein author Mary Shelley possessing a woman called Ida in this era. While under a trance, Ida gives away details of a local crime boss and dies after falling down a flight of stairs.
Meanwhile, Chicago scientist Dr. Cornelia Euphronius has created the monster made famous by the book and previous Frankenstein movies and is now looking to find him a companion. He decides to reanimate Ida as the monster’s bride, but the couple get caught up in a series of problems with crime gangs across the country as they go on the run. It’s been described in reviews as a gothic romance, but it could also easily fit into categories like horror and crime drama.
The film shows that, basically, any two or more ideas can be merged to create a fresh mixture that gives us new ways to look at the world. 1993’s Back to the Future 3 and 2004’s Shaun of the Dead are among the early examples of mixing genres to great effect.
