Velma Season 1 (HBO Max) – Episodes 5 and 6: Recap and Ending Explained: Crystal Cove Mines became a pivotal location after High School. Velma’s mother’s case was centered there, and Daphne seemed to have been abandoned there before her moms found her.

The previous episode saw Velma get a half-sister. It also gave her the platform to turn Fred down. On the mystery front, as there was absolutely no progress in identifying the murderer, a few of the hottest students were given a personal security guard.

Would there be a fourth victim on this week’s set of two episodes?

Velma (Season 1), Episodes 5 & 6 Recap:

Episode 5: Marching Band Sleepover

Velma was pacing in her room and looked scared as her hallucinations took over in Norville’s absence. Aman Dinkley prioritized his newborn daughter’s arrival over dropping Velma at school. He reminded her of the marching band sleepover. The HOPE officers resigned due to sexual harassment. Hence the town would impose a curfew and cancel school events. That included the marching band sleepover.

Daphne went back to the Crystal Cove Mines to search for answers. Over there, she met people in hairy costumes who revealed they were her parents. The duo claimed that Daphne’s moms stole her from them and then vanished as she processed the news.

Fred found a way to win Velma over. He revealed he found something to help with Diya Dinkley’s disappearance. He dropped the name of Dr. Edna Perdue. Despite that, Velma kept focusing on finding Norville. He was with Gigi, who began controlling him.

Velma and Fred visited the Historical Society to find Dr. Edna Perdue’s research. Diya Dinkley, who researched the mad scientist, took the journals. Her hallucinations almost killed her, as Fred couldn’t make her laugh. Hence, as Velma needed Norville, she decided to split him and Gigi. This saw her host the marching band sleepover at her house.

Fred came to help and decided to get pizzas, as Velma’s house had no food. Daphne and Norville showed up at Velma’s house. While the former wanted to discuss her real parents, the latter was a band member. Gigi also arrived, having registered for the band earlier in the day.

Gigi dared Velma to a flute off and won. Fred delayed the pizza and tossed aside a bunch of already prepared pizzas as he deemed that they weren’t prepared properly. As the band members had no food, they began vandalizing Velma’s house. Velma then tricked Gigi into blabbing that Edna Perdue was Norville’s grandmother. Norville lambasted himself for trusting Velma and Gigi.

Fred devised a trick to get food, and Velma praised him. However, as there was no car, Fred, Gigi, Velma, and Norville used Daphne’s moms’ police car to get around during curfew. Just as they were about to be discovered breaking the curfew, Velma sacrificed herself to let Fred, Gigi, and Norville escape. Principal and counselor Rogers were also in the police van. The following day, Principal Rogers asked Velma to visit the office to get the information she wanted about Dr. Edna Perdue.

Daphne wanted to talk about the adoption but picked up on her moms talking in sync. She then helped Velma and co get a car. When Norville reversed out of the drive, a drain cover popped up. Daphne was intrigued and found a ladder leading to a boat. She went down and sailed into what was a mine tour.

The episode ended with the house spick and span once Aman, Sophie, and Amanda arrived.

Episode 6: The Sins of the Fathers and Some of the Mothers

Daphne’s parents dropped their names- Carroll and Darren. Velma was mad at Aman Dinkley for taking paternity leave and not being able to drop her to school. She met with Principal Rogers, and Norville sat in to ensure Velma didn’t hallucinate. The principal spilled the beans on her mother. Dr. Perdue was on project SCOOBI (Special Covert Operations Brain Initiative), which was crafted to deal with meddling kids. Principal Rogers showed Velma the papers she was hunting for, but the hallucinations took over, and Velma needed a shot of adrenaline to get back.

Norville and Velma spoke, leading Dinkley to conclude she hallucinated because of daddy issues. She went to convince her dad to believe her about her mom. He gladly ran out since taking care of Amanda was too taxing for him. Velma learned that Aman Dinkley used her to get back to the office rather than spend paternity leave with her. This led her to dismiss his opinions completely. With this mindset, Velma demanded the box from Principal Rogers. She learned that Fred’s house used to belong to the Rogers, and an underground lab was bricked up.

Velma went to the Jones’ residence and took Fred to the cellars. Fred found the bricked wall, pressed a button, and caused all the bricks to fall on them both. Aman Dinkley traced Velma through her phone and moved the bricks from Fred and her. He explained why he distanced himself from Velma and then followed her down the steps. His reason for it is that he felt Velma was fine with Diya Dinkley.

However, after Diya disappeared, he felt guilty for not being around. Velma found a paper with the word ‘Jinkies’ written on it and again faced hallucinations. Aman said he believed her story that Diya was taken. A few seconds later, the hallucinations took over again, but Aman expressed his belief in Velma once more. This was because the word ‘Jinkies’ was in Diya Dinkley’s handwriting.

Daphne arrived at the mines. The audience saw Darren tell the miners to keep her presence’s true reason a secret. They also saw Brenda’s tank top in his pocket. Something shady was up. Darren revealed that he and Carroll were criminals who dealt with crystals by mining at the closed Crystal Cove mines. They used the existing beliefs to rob people legally.

Later, when Daphne returned to the mines, she saw that her parents were getting ready to flee. They only lured her back to the mines, as they needed some insurance to escape the cops. Daphne was being used as bait. As Darren aimed a gun at her, Daphne’s moms showed up and saved her.

The cops cuffed the group. They also identified Brenda’s tank top, but Darren claimed they found it in the mines. In this discussion, Carroll gave them the slip. Her disappearance was unnoticed.

Velma (Season 1), Episode 6 Ending, Explained:

Daphne began taking crystals from a cart and throwing them onto the ground. Her moms told her the truth about her discovery. Daphne’s parents had left her behind when faced with a choice of taking their crystals or their baby along with them. They also shed light on why Daphne wasn’t told the truth.

Carroll was in the tunnel adjacent to Dr. Edna Perdue’s lab. She heard someone pop up behind her. A masked figure in a lab coat struck her down when she turned.

Why wasn’t Daphne told the truth about how she was found?

Daphne’s moms kept quiet about it as they didn’t want her to know her parents were criminals. They also wanted her not to have abandonment issues.

How did Daphne’s moms know where she was?

Daphne’s moms were onto Daphne’s birth parents ever since last week’s episodes when a geode was sent through their adoptive daughter’s window. They knew the story of Daphne’s discovery and joined the dots. Then, they kept an eye on her and decided to follow her into the drain and along the river.

Is Diya Dinkley still alive?

All we know right now is that a paper with her handwriting was found. The footsteps in Dr. Edna Perdue’s lab weren’t identified, and there was absolutely no sign of Diya Dinkley being alive. Hence, that is still very much up in the air, even after six episodes.

Who could be behind the mask?

The figure that attacked Carroll had a saw in its hands. Also, the masked figure was quite big. Hence, that could rule out a few people. For example, the likes of Sophie and Daphne’s moms can be eliminated. Other people who aren’t the person wearing the mask are Fred, Velma, and Aman Dinkley, who were inside Perdue’s lab, which was adjacent to the mine tunnels.

Initial suspicion is that it could be the Mayor behind the mask. It could even be Diya Dinkley. Remember Velma’s thought that led her to believe her mother was making a real-life case to solve? Could the ‘Jinkies’ have been a specifically designed clue?

The research, the SCOOBI project, the layers behind the mystery, and connections with the usual suspects show that there could be weight behind this theory.

Will it be true? Find out next week in Fog Fest and Velma in The Woods.
