After giving a powerful performance in the Oscar-winning film Oppenheimer, acclaimed actor Alden Ehrenreich has nabbed another big project. Ehrenreich has joined the cast for Zach Cregger’s upcoming film “Weapons,” Cregger’s follow-up to 2022’s “Barbarian.” Barbarian is a horror thriller film written and directed by Cregger in his solo screenwriting and directorial debut. The film received largely positive reviews, with praise for Cregger’s screenplay and direction. It grossed $45.4 million worldwide on a production budget of $4–4.5 million.
According to Empire, Ehrenreich has been cast in New Line Cinema’s Weapons, which already has quite the star-studded cast featuring Josh Brolin and Julia Garner. Details regarding the movie’s premise are kept under wraps. Nonetheless, the upcoming movie has been described as “an interrelated, multistory horror epic that tonally is in the vein of Magnolia.“
Cregger will also produce “Weapons” alongside his “Barbarian” producing team, Roy Lee of Vertigo and J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules of BoulderLight Pictures. Ehrenreich’s role in Cregger’s film hasn’t been disclosed yet. But what else do we know is that he will also be seen in Marvel’s upcoming Disney+ miniseries “Ironheart,” which is expected to be released in 2025.
Other movies and series Ehrenreich has appeared in include Chloe Domont’s acclaimed romantic drama “Fair Play,” and Elizabeth Banks’s box office hit “Cocaine Bear.” His recent choices in roles show a willingness to step into other genres that challenge the audience’s perception of him as an actor, and being cast in “Weapons” is another step in that direction.
The addition of Ehrenreich to the already formidable cast shows that proven acting talent are more than eager to join Cregger on what he puts out next.
Alden Ehrenreich reportedly replaced Pedro Pascal in ‘Weapons’
While Alden Ehrenreich has joined the cast, the HBO epic “Game of Thrones” actor Pedro Pascal was originally attached to star in “Weapons.” However, it is not clear if he was offered the role which now will be played by Ehrenreich. Pascal couldn’t make it for Cregger’s project due to his busy schedule. The actor is set to star as Reed Richards in Marvel’s upcoming “Fantastic Four” film, which made him unavailable to star in “Weapons.”
Another cast member of “Weapons,” Julia Garner, will join Pascal in the Marvel movie, portraying Shalla-Bal, a smaller role that will allow her to appear in both movies.
“Weapons” don’t have a confirmed release date yet.
