The Cannes Flim Festival is currently the talk of the town. There has been anticipation of the films that will be making their entry to the Cannes this year in 2024. Let’s catch up on the Cannes Film Festival so far. First, Cannes unveiled its 2024 poster featuring a scene from Rhapsody in August, directed by Japanese master Akira Kurosawa. Now, Cannes has announced the addition of thirteen new films to its 2024 lineup. These include films by Oliver Stone, Lou Ye, and French directors Arnaud Desplechin and Michel Hazanavicius.
What does this new film’s latest inclusion in Cannes 2024 hold?
Michel Hazanavicius’s 2011 film The Artist won the Academy Award for Best Picture at the 84th Academy Awards. Now, his latest animated film, The Most Precious of Cargoes, will make its entry to the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. The film is set during World War II, and it centers on a French Jewish family who is deported to Auschwitz. On the train to the death camp, in a desperate gesture, the father throws one of his twins out into the snow, where a childless Polish couple discovers him.
As for Oliver Stone, in recent years, he has primarily focused on several documentaries based on political leaders and continues on this route with Lula. Lula is Stone’s latest film, which follows the tale of former Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The film is in the Special Screening section.
Moreover, French filmmaker Arnaud Desplechin’s film Filmlovers is a mainstay at Cannes. The film revisits the character of Paul Dédalus, who previously appeared in My Sex Life…or How I Got into an Argument and My Golden Days. The new and final chapter in the series will revolve around a movie theatre from the 1960s to the present day.
Other new Palme d’Or contenders include Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof’s “The Seed Of The Sacred Fig” and Romanian director Emanuel Pârvu, who will make his Competition debut with his third feature “Three Miles to the End of the World” about a gay and ostracized teenager.
