Prepare for an enthralling showcase of cinematic brilliance as the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, the 77th edition running from May 14 to 25, unveils its official lineup of 19 competition films. Among the prestigious selections, Ali Abbasi presents ‘The Apprentice,’ a gripping exploration of Donald Trump’s formative years. Andrea Arnold returns with ‘Bird,’ featuring the mesmerizing Barry Keoghan, promising a captivating narrative. Meanwhile, Jacques Audiard introduces ‘Emilia Perez,’ a unique blend of music and crime comedy. Cannes 2024 promises an unforgettable journey through the art of storytelling, with each film offering a distinct perspective on the human experience.
Meanwhile, American filmmaker Sean Baker will bring Anora to the Croisette. Poor Things filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos will launch his latest collab with Emma Stone, Kinds of Kindness. David Cronenberg returns with The Shrouds, and Paul Schrader will debut Oh Canada, starring Jacob Elordi, Uma Thurman, and Richard Gere.
In the main competition, robust English language and American representation stand tall, as auteurs from all over the world will be present at the festival. Acclaimed Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia, who picked up the festival’s Best Documentary prize in 2021, will mark her Cannes debut with All We Imagine As Light, an Indian-shot feature produced by Thomas Hakim and Julien Graff of the French-based Petit Chaos. Debut feature filmmaker Agathe Riedinger also landed a competition spot with Wild Diamond.
Outside of the main competition, notable highlights include Saudi Arabia’s inaugural film at the festival, Norah, directed by Tawfik Alzaidi. Additionally, French actress-turned-filmmaker Noémie Merlant is set to unveil her sophomore feature, The Balconettes, as a midnight screening. Furthermore, the satirical Rumors also joins the lineup, which features Cate Blanchette and is helmed by Guy Maddin.
As already announced, big-ticket titles confirmed today include Francis Coppola’s latest big-budget film, Megalopolis, which has locked a gala premiere slot at the Palais on Friday evening, May 17. The film will be screened in competition. Out of Competition, Kevin Costner will debut the first part of Horizon: An American Saga as a world premiere.
Moreover, George Miller’s anticipated sequel, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, has been confirmed for an out-of-comp slot. The new installment will be released theatrically in France on May 22, two days ahead of its U.S. launch.
The 2024 Cannes kicks off with Quentin Dupieux’s French comedy road movie, Le Deuxième Acte (The Second Act), and was among the first movies to be announced beyond the lineup. The film stars Léa Seydoux, Vincent Lindon, Louis Garrel, and Raphaël Quenard, who will also attend the premiere at Cannes. The film will debut out of competition at the festival on Tuesday, May 14, and will hit French theaters on the same day. Following last year’s billion-dollar Barbie, visionary auteur Greta Gerwig will preside over this year’s competition jury.
